Report from an attendee at the UUCC Discussion after church on 11-20-2022
About seven people attended today’s (11-20) meeting to discuss the UUAs proposed revision to the UU Principles. Most or all of us at the meeting thought that November 28 would be our last opportunity to have input before the final version is proposed for a vote at General Assembly in June. However, when I opened the comment form I was delighted to see the following. This form will close on November 28, after which the Commission will prepare a revised draft for a new round of comment to happen in December. So there will be a bit more time for reflection, both individually and as a community, and for you to submit comments to the UUA committee drafting the proposed changes, should you wish to do so. Additionally, there will be a mini-assembly in May 2023, for congregational delegates to offer amendments to the proposal.Still, December is soon and the proposed changes are substantial. I urge you to take a look at them. Links to the info are available on the UUCC website athttps://uucleveland.org/events/uucc-community-conversation-proposed-draft-change-to-principles-values-and-bylaws-2/And remember, there is a Zoom call next Sunday, November 27 at 4 p.m.
3.The process is outlined here: https://www.uua.org/uuagovernance/committees/article-ii-study-commission
The Study Commission will present its final draft to the UUA Board in January for inclusion on the agenda for General Assembly 2023. It will then be the subject of mini-Assemblies before the initial vote at GA 2023. If it passes that delegate vote by a majority, it will require a 2/3 majority vote at GA 2024 to become the new Article II of the Bylaws.
This draft makes significant changes to Article II. We invite you to read it using one of the practices we have started following in our work:
- Read it the first time to observe how it makes you feel.
- Read a second time, observe what it makes you think.
- Finally read it a third time before thinking about any suggestions.
It will be ideal if you can utilize the online form over email to share individual feedback as it more easily gathered and read. But do feel free to direct questions to email@example.com
