SUMMARY:UU's Together Virtually
DESCRIPTION:Hear ye Hear ye! \n\n\n\n Have you heard the buzz about the UUA Climate Justice Revival? Over 350 congregations across the country are utilizing the resources provided to create their own version of this national event. UUCC is offering: Saturday September 28 9-1 with snacks Sunday September 29 service at 10:15\, followed by Power Hour! You are welcome to join us. Here’s the registration link: https://uucleveland.org/uucc_event/2024-climate-justice-revival/ \n\n\n\n Our congregation will: Create a complex representation of the challenging realities and liberatory possibilities for climate justice in our unique context Develop a vision of a flourishing future Identify a clear set of potential actions that we can take to realize this vision Enable participants to understand their roles in the interdependent ecosystem of creating climate justice and collective liberation. What does this have to do with UUs Together? We will gather on Zoom on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 30 from 7-8:30 to debrief the weekend\, learn if there are actions all 3 congregations can participate in\, and help WSUU and SWUU have enough information to consider doing a revival\, perhaps around Earth Day 2025. At minimum\, it should be interesting to hear the impact of this relatively novel set of activities. To receive a zoom link\, please email Laurie at sunnyskies2023@yahoo.com

SUMMARY:The Year to Save the Earth - with Jim Scott
DESCRIPTION:“The Year to Save the Earth” – A Multimedia Experience by Jim Scott \n\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday\, September 22nd at 4:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall for “The Year to Save the Earth”. Mixing powerful songs and beautiful projected images\, The Year to Save the Earth takes us from grieving to celebration and from protest to positive vision for the planet. Jim’s lyrical melodies and outspoken poetry celebrate our beautiful\, amazing\, and fragile world. While facing the urgency of the environmental crisis\, the program’s message is one of optimism with many invitations to join in the singing. These amazing songs challenge us to feel\, to learn and to act! \n\n\n\nProlific composer guitarist Jim Scott was awarded an NEA grant to present this multimedia concert in Worcester MA with band and chorus. Jim brings warmth and humor with his jazz and world music influenced songs. He’s visited over 700 UU Churches in 4 decades of travels and his songs are in our hymnbooks (“Gather the Spirit”\, “May Your Life Be as a Song”\, and more). Formerly a member of the Paul Winter Consort\, Jim was composer of their celebrated Missa Gaia/Earth Mass and sang their anthem song Common Ground. He has toured the world\, recorded nine CDs of original music\, published a growing line of choral works\, and created the Earth and Spirit Songbook\, an anthology of over 100 songs of Earth by many contemporary composers.

SUMMARY:The Surprising Malcolm X
DESCRIPTION:UUCC will show the PBS documentary\, “Malcolm X: Make It Plain” and serve as host to several other area congregations who are actively engaged in promoting anti-racist perspectives and practices. One of the most pivotal figures of our time\, while Malcolm X articulated the global struggle against racism with profound clarity\, he was also\, surprisingly to many\, the soul and vision of fundamental human rights. Transcending the conversation beyond civil rights\, he promoted and demanded the recognition of our common humanity and the inherent worthiness and dignity of everyone\, both locally and globally. \n\n\n\nCome\, be surprised\, and engage with others who are doing their part to create more just and caring communities within their congregations and in society at large. There will be a brief intermission (with light refreshments) followed by a half hour of table discussion ending by 6:30. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 3:30.  The FILM STARTS PROMPTLY AT 4:00.    Pre- registration is highly recommended at kgrochau@gmail.com \n\n\n\nSponsored by: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland; Community Church of Chesterland; Social Justice Ministry of Federated Church\, Chagrin Falls; and Racial Equity Buddies

SUMMARY:EgageGCC: Pretrial Justice Action
DESCRIPTION:GCC’s Pre-Trial Justice Team Action May 7th at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church. \n\n\n\nThe 7pm action on May 7th will be in person and on Zoom. Turnout will be critically important. We want to send out a message of power to the community and its public officials! \n\n\n\nWhy are People in Jail Before Trial? Not for punishment because they have not been convicted. Most people are in jail before trial because:– They are too poor to pay bail.-They have mental health and/or addiction issues.-They were arrested for non-violent crimes. \n\n\n\nWhat’s wrong with jail before trial?-It violates the rule of law – the presumption of innocence and the constitution’s prohibition against excessive bail.-It harms individuals and their communities\, is costly\, and does not protect public safety. \n\n\n\nWhat are alternatives?-Providing pretrial services that:* Investigate and recommend alternatives to jail\, such as diversion and supervised release.* Ensure that people come to court for scheduled dates.* Help people to keep and/or get jobs\, housing\, families\, transportation\, and other resources.* Protect public safety because people are less likely to re-offend. \n\n\n\nWhy Should You Attend this Public Hearing?-You will hear how the pretrial process currently works in our County and learn research-based\, data-driven best practices for pretrial services and join other GCC and community members in publicly calling for a more just and effective pretrial system – to reduce jail before trial. You will learn how we can do better! Learn more here https://www.greaterclevelandcongregations.org/issues/pretrial-justice \n\n\n\nThank you!UUCC GCC Team

SUMMARY:Learning to Hate Democracy: The Rise of Right-Wing Organizations
DESCRIPTION:In person or on Zoom \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Matthew Lacombe\, Alexander P. Lamis Associate Professor in U.S. Politics\, CWRU. \n\n\n\nRight-wing\, MAGA-friendly “think tanks” such as the Claremont Institute\, the Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute think equality is an unnatural state and democracy is for weaklings. Their influence can be seen in all aspects of national\, state\, and local government. \n\n\n\nIn Ohio\, the Buckeye Institute has been involved in many ultra-conservative initiatives such as promoting charter schools as a solution to high school drop-out rates. The Buckeye Institute is also an affiliate member of the State Policy Network (SPN). SPN is a web of right-wing think tanks and is the tip of the spear of far-right\, nationally funded policy agenda in the states that support extremists in the Republican Party.  \n\n\n\nWhat is the wave of right-wing think tanks? What can those who love democracy do to support our institutions?
