SUMMARY:Cinematic Scripture:  Dead Poets Society
DESCRIPTION:Dead Poets Society (1989)  is a 1989 American coming-of-age film directed by Peter Weir and written by Tom Schulman. It stars Robin Williams and is set in 1959 at a fictional boarding school called Welton Academy\, and focuses around a select group of boys\, who over time take several pieces of advice from their English teacher\, John Keating (Williams).  \n\n\n\nJoin us every Wednesday night from 6pm – 9pm in the Fellowship Hall for a movie!Unitarian Universalism draws inspiration from world religions\, humanism\, poets and philosophers\, personal experience… and the big screen?  Join us in the Fellowship Hall as we gather to watch a variety of films\, from Hollywood blockbusters to forgotten indie gems followed by a discussion of the question: Is this scripture?  We’ll explore whether the film offers meaning\, moral guidance\, prophetic truth\, or espouses one of our guiding principles and find in what ways we personally connect (or don’t connect) with the people\, places\, and plots we’ve seen. This group is open to anyone who wants to drop in. SUMMARY:Interdependence Practice Group
DESCRIPTION:The first gathering of our Interdependence Practice Group will be Sunday\, October 4\, 11:45AM in the Baker Room (Room 213) What’s an “Interdependence Practice Group”? It’s a bit of an experiment we’re engaging in this fall\, and you don’t really have to be a part of an organized group to take part. \n\n\n\nThe goal is essentially for us to commit to more intentionally engage in honoring our interdependence. This can be within the group\, and it can also be with others in our personal circles. It can be small things: Carpooling just to share a ride\, not out of need. Preparing a meal with or for someone just to have a meal together\, not because someone is in crisis. It could be anything really\, and we’ll explore in our first time together what kinds of things honor our interdependence more fully. \n\n\n\nThen\, we’ll meet once a month to share how things have gone\, both for a sense of mutual accountability and also for mutual inspiration and celebration. Maybe there are unexpected challenges or blessings we’ll hear from one another. Sometimes new practices are easier to take on when you know there’s a group journeying alongside you. \n\n\n\nThat’s the rhythm. Live intentional interdependence\, return to the group and share. We’llcommit to do that for six months and see what emerges. Our inaugural time to connect will be Sunday\, October 4\, at 11:45AM in the Baker Room (Room 213)\, and we’ll chart a course from there.

SUMMARY:RESCHEDULED: How to Lower the Temperature: Guidance on Listening & Learning in Divided Times
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dan Moulthrop\, CEO\, The City Club of Cleveland. \n\n\n\nAre you dreading a Thanksgiving argument with Uncle Al over your opposing political beliefs? Did a controversial speaker ignite loud boos at your son’s graduation? Our political climate Is increasingly marked by demonizing opponents\, building identity around grievances and labeling disagreements as disqualifying. What we agreed was hate speech 5 or 10 years ago is now mainstream. How can we turn this into politics of action\, progress and accountability?  \n\n\n\nIn person in Fellowship Hallor via Zoom: https://bit.ly/UUCCForumsThatMatterFall2026

SUMMARY:Facilitating Connection: Training for UUCC Group Leaders
DESCRIPTION:“Small groups are where transformation happens.”Rev. Randy Partain\n\n\n\nFacilitators do not make that transformation happen by themselves. They help create the conditions for it: a covenant people can use\, room for different voices\, careful listening\, and ways to respond when a group gets stuck. \n\n\n\nUUCC is offering this participatory training twice. Both sessions cover the same material. Choose the one that works for you. \n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, October 3\, 9:30 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Lunch included.\n\n\n\n\nRegister for Facilitating Connection. Please register by September 28 so we can plan the training sessions\, meals\, childcare\, and access support. \n\n\n\nWho should attend?\n\n\n\nThis training is for: \n\n\n\n\nPeople who currently lead or facilitate a UUCC group\n\n\n\nPeople interested in facilitating one of our new Chalice Circles\n\n\n\nAnyone who wants to develop facilitation skills for a future role at UUCC\n\n\n\n\nYou do not need previous facilitation experience to attend. If you are interested but unsure about taking on a facilitation role\, the training gives you a chance to learn\, practice\, and explore before deciding. Curiosity can open opportunities we didn’t know existed. \n\n\n\nWhat will we do?\n\n\n\nWe will experience some of the practices ourselves and then look at what a facilitator is paying attention to. Together\, we will work on: \n\n\n\n\nCreating a covenant made of mutual promises\n\n\n\nListening without immediately advising\, fixing\, or redirecting the conversation\n\n\n\nHelping more people participate\n\n\n\nResponding when one person dominates\, the group moves off track\, or someone makes a harmful comment\n\n\n\nKnowing when to handle something within the group and when to ask for support\n\n\n\n\nWe will try out brief responses to situations that arise in real groups rather than spending the day talking about facilitation in theory. \n\n\n\nWhy this matters\n\n\n\nFacilitating a UU group is a form of shared ministry. It is one of the places where we practice our values\, learn to live in covenant\, and help create a congregation where more people can participate and belong. \n\n\n\nHaving people with different levels of experience will strengthen the training. Current leaders can bring real situations and practices that have worked\, while newer facilitators can bring the questions they are still exploring. \n\n\n\nThe registration form includes space to share dietary needs and request childcare or other access support. \n\n\n\nChoose your training session and register here. Please register by September 14 so we can plan the training sessions\, meals\, childcare\, and access support. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Jenni Papp\, Director of Lifespan Faith Development\, at jenni.papp@uucleveland.org.

SUMMARY:You can be a Navigator for only 2 hours a month!
DESCRIPTION:A note about how to fit being a Navigator for our UUCC Pretrial Support Team into your busy schedule. You make your own schedule! Whether you can spend a couple of hours a month\, or more\, it’s up to you. \n\n\n\nMany of our Navigators are working full or part time. You decide how many clients you can take at a time – some people can take one\, others more. \n\n\n\nYou can provide the entire support to your client over the phone. You remind them of their court dates over the phone. If your client needs transportation\, you can mail bus passes or schedule Uber for them. You refer them to needed community resources\, using our listing of services and “211” over the phone. \n\n\n\nOur Navigators are doing an amazing job\, and we need more volunteers to keep up with our referrals. Every volunteer helps a person through a confusing and frightening time in their life. Can you help?

SUMMARY:The Disease That Steals the Self
DESCRIPTION:Speaker(s): Dr. Martha Sajatovic\, CADRC Core Leader of Outreach\, Recruitment and Engagement; researcher\, professor\, psychiatry and neurology\, CWRU \n\n\n\nUnderstanding Alzheimer’s and the Fight for a Cure\n\n\n\nIn the United States\, one in three Americans over the age of 80 is living with Alzheimer’s disease\, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Nearly two-thirds of those affected are women. The disease often begins its silent progression decades before diagnosis — starting with mild forgetfulness\, such as misplacing keys or struggling to find words\, and advancing to profound memory loss and cognitive decline. Over time\, Alzheimer’s can erode not only memory but the very sense of self and identity. What do we truly know about this devastating disease? What causes it\, and who is most at risk? How effective are current treatments\, and is there real hope for prevention or a cure? \n\n\n\nThese urgent questions will be explored by leading experts from the Cleveland Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (CADRC) — a collaboration formed in 2019 among the Cleveland Clinic\, University Hospitals\, MetroHealth\, and Case Western Reserve University. Find out what science has uncovered\, what challenges remain\, and how researchers are working to preserve memory\, identity\, and dignity. \n\n\n\nIn person in Fellowship Hallor via Zoom
