SUMMARY:Property Tax Debate in Ohio
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Zach Schiller\, Research Director\, Ohio Policy Matters \n\n\n\nHow Can/Should We Pay for What We Need?\n\n\n\nOhioans’ frustration over rising property taxes is driving a wave of legislative and constitutional proposals—ranging from limiting local levies to eliminating property taxes altogether. With inflation pushing up property values\, tax burdens increase even without new levies. But if we reduce or eliminate property taxes\, what happens to school funding\, emergency services\, and local infrastructure? What are the pros and cons of property taxation\, the real-world consequences of cutting it\, and potential alternative revenue sources? \n\n\n\nIn person in Fellowship Hallor via In person in Fellowship Hallor via Zoom

DESCRIPTION:Join Greater Cleveland Congregations (GCC) as we kick off 2026 and celebrate 15 years of organizing together! SUMMARY:The Divided States of America
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Earl Leiken\, Senior Fellow\, Levin College of Public Affairs & Education\,CSU and Lecturer\, Siegal College of Lifetime Learning\, CWRU; former Mayor\,Shaker Heights \n\n\n\nHow Did We Get This Way?\n\n\n\nWhy has America become so deeply divided — politically\, culturally\, and interpersonally? \n\n\n\nDrawing from a course he teaches at Siegal College\, former Shaker Heights Mayor Earl Leiken explores the psychological\, cultural\, and economic forces that have driven Americans apart. This program will examine insights from multiple experts and research on the full political spectrum — from progressives to MAGA supporters — to better understand the roots of polarization. SUMMARY:Tending Covenant Circle
DESCRIPTION:As our congregation approaches a capital campaign\, it is only human to find ourselves a bit anxious when talking large sums of money and altering our “congregational home” when there are differing views among us. \n\n\n\nLaurie Albright and Mike Miller will conduct a session that will reinforce/remind ourselves how we live into our congregational covenant throughout this process\, and focus on how we want to treat/be with each other. \n\n\n\nThe process involves a talking piece\, and we will engage in a series of rounds. Each person has an opportunity to respond in each round (or can pass). We will gather in Fellowship Hall for 90 minutes. \n\n\n\nPlease indicate your interest by sending an email to: Ljalbright@hotmail.com\, and \, your availability to gather from 10:00-11:30 on Saturday January 10. We have room for 12 participants\, spots are filling! \n\n\n\nWe look forward to hearing from you!

SUMMARY:Confronting Authoritarianism
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cherie Strachan\, PhD\, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics \n\n\n\nHistory shows a familiar pattern: regimes weaken the press\, universities and courts in the guise of protecting the public while amassing ever greater personal power. What power do we truly have\, and what actions can drive real governmental change? \n\n\n\nIn person in Fellowship Hallor via Zoom https://bit.ly/UUCCForumsFall2025.

SUMMARY:Does the Great Replacement Theory Underlie Current Policies?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Marvin McMickle\, Pastor Emeritus\, Antioch Baptist Church of Cleveland; Professor Emeritus\, Ashland Theological Seminary \n\n\n\nAdherents of the Great Replacement Theory—the belief that there is a deliberate effort to replace white Americans of Northern European descent with people of other races—frequently oppose liberal immigration policies and Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Critics\, however\, often dismiss this theory as a fringe\, right-wing conspiracy with little grounding in reality. Even among those who support equal rights for all\, there is debate about whether compensatory policies for historically disadvantaged groups are fair. For example\, the Supreme Court recently ruled against affirmative action in college admissions for Black Americans\, while special services continue to be provided to other groups\, such as Native Americans. \n\n\n\nThis raises difficult questions: How do we determine the facts in such polarizing debates? Can justice for some inadvertently lead to injustice for others? \n\n\n\nIn person in Fellowship Hallor via Zoom https://bit.ly/UUCCForumsFall2025.

SUMMARY:Tariffs: Who Should Decide? Who Pays?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jonathan Ernest\, Assistant Professor of Economics\, Weatherhead School of Management\, CWRU \n\n\n\nDo current issues of national security and foreign competition merit tariffs? In 1962 and 1974\, Congress delegated to the President the power to implement tariffs to address Cold War national security concerns and to counter unfair foreign trade practices—while still promoting global trade liberalization. \n\n\n\nTariffs are taxes paid by importers to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). That money goes to the U.S. Treasury. They are regressive taxes – everyone is taxed at the same rate\, but low-income persons pay a higher percentage of their income than do the wealthy.  \n\n\n\nDo current trade conditions justify bypassing Congress to impose high tariffs? What will be their impact on us? Should Congress reclaim its Constitutional authority to regulate duties? What is the real cost to consumers? \n\n\n\nIn person in Fellowship Hallor via Zoom https://bit.ly/UUCCForumsFall2025.

SUMMARY:Power by Pen: 160+ Executive Orders
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Avidan Cover JD\, Law Professor\, CWRU; Director\, Institute for Global Security Law and Policy \n\n\n\nSince its founding\, the country has been divided on the question of Presidential power. Although the Constitution creates three co-equal branches of government\, some people also advocate the concept of a powerful Unitary Executive. \n\n\n\nThe more than 160 Executive Orders President Trump has signed reshape US programs that are under Federal control. They target diversity\, gender issues\, international agreements\, climate\, immigration\, COVID mandates\, education and more. Many face legal challenges. If courts cannot — and Congress will not — hold the President accountable\, has the separation of powers been destroyed?    \n\n\n\nIn person in Fellowship Hallor via Zoom https://bit.ly/UUCCForumsFall2025.
