DESCRIPTION:Kevin AndersonSat. March 1 @ 3 PM ET on Zoom “Climate Uncensored: The Unvarnished Truth”We are beginning to see that predictions of serious climate disruptions are coming true — far sooner than had been forecast. WHY?  What factors had scientists under appreciated? Climate scientist Kevin Anderson will delve into the many factors shaping climate change and bringing it to the world far sooner than expected.  There may be no going back from or correction of some important underlying factorsKevin Anderson is Professor of Energy and Climate Change\, holding a joint chair in the School of Engineering at the University of Manchester (UK)\, the Centre for Sustainability and the Environment (CEMUS) at Uppsala University (Sweden) and the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation (CET) at Bergen University (Norway). In 2016 he began a two year fellowship as the Zennström Professor of Climate Change Leadership in Uppsala\, where he continues to work today\, and has previously been both Deputy Director and Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.Prof. Anderson has been a contributor to many climate conferences\, including the 4 Degrees and Beyond International Climate Conference in 2009.  A video of his presentation is available online. You may visit the Climate Uncensored website at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcodO-vpzMrHtDWjk_iSSMD5bIxYR0N0BldTELLING IT AS IT ISREGISTER

SUMMARY:Presidential Voting Systems: Is the Electoral College the Best Method?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Robert Alexander\, PhD\, Political Science\, Founding Director\, Bowling Green State University Democracy and Public Policy Research Network \n\n\n\nThe US Constitution dictates the Electoral College must determine the President and Vice President. Thus\, each state has the same number of electors as members of Congress.  In 2000 and 2016\, the Presidential Election produced a winner via Electoral College votes but not popular votes.   There is\, however\, a variation in determining state electors.  Maine and Nebraska use a strategic population-based method to determine their electoral votes in each congressional district. Can their strategy be used in other states to create election winners based on the popular vote? Are there other possibilities? \n\n\n\nIn person in UUCC’s Fellowship Hall\, 21600 Shaker Blvd in Shaker Hts.or via ZOOM

SUMMARY:School Vouchers: What’s the Effect on Public and Private Education?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker(s): Dan Heintz\, Cleveland Hts.-University Hts. School Board Member\, Chardon Teacher\, and Steering Committee Member of the Vouchers Hurt Ohio coalition; other speaker TBD \n\n\n\nSince the late 1990’s Ohio’s voucher system has increased access to state-funded school scholarships.  Previously\, eligibility was  primarily based  on a family’s income or a school’s academic performance.  Since 2023’s dramatic voucher expansion\, most K-12 students are eligible for scholarship assistance to both private and parochial schools. Do these school  choice programs create a competitive educational marketplace?  Or are the school vouchers unconstitutional\, given the use of public tax funds for private and religious education? Currently l/3 of Ohio’s public schools are financed by the school voucher program.

SUMMARY:The States of the Earth: An Ecological and Racial History of Secularization with Mohamed Amer Meziane
DESCRIPTION:You’re Invited:   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“An extraordinary book. Mohamed Amer Meziane’s breathtaking analysis of the  making of fossil states opens to a new genre of history writing where the very layers of  earth’s riches are at its center.”  \n\n\n\n—Ann Laura Stoler\, author of Carnal Knowledge and Imperial Power\, Along the  Archival Grain  \n\n\n\nHow the disenchantment of empire led to climate change  \n\n\n\nWhile industrial states competed to colonize Asia and Africa in the nineteenth century\,  conversion to Christianity was replaced by a civilizing mission. This new secular impetus  strode hand in hand with racial capitalism in the age of empires: a terrestrial paradise was  to be achieved through accumulation and the ravaging of nature.  \n\n\n\nFar from a defense of religion\, The States of the Earth argues that phenomena such as  evangelism and political Islam are best understood as products of empire and  secularization. In a world where material technology was considered divine\, religious and secular forces both tried to achieve Heaven on Earth by destroying Earth itself.  \n\n\n\nVia Zoom – REGISTER: OCTOBER 9

Most groups meet in-person\, and some meet virtually\, with new ones forming all the time! \n\n\n\nSmall group sign-ups typically kick off in the Fall; but you can join an open group any time \n\n\n\nStop by Fellowship Hall after service on October 6 at 11:30 to learn more about what we have to offer \n\n\n\nCheck out our website for more information:   Read More

SUMMARY:The Year to Save the Earth - with Jim Scott
DESCRIPTION:“The Year to Save the Earth” – A Multimedia Experience by Jim Scott \n\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday\, September 22nd at 4:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall for “The Year to Save the Earth”. Mixing powerful songs and beautiful projected images\, The Year to Save the Earth takes us from grieving to celebration and from protest to positive vision for the planet. Jim’s lyrical melodies and outspoken poetry celebrate our beautiful\, amazing\, and fragile world. While facing the urgency of the environmental crisis\, the program’s message is one of optimism with many invitations to join in the singing. These amazing songs challenge us to feel\, to learn and to act! \n\n\n\nProlific composer guitarist Jim Scott was awarded an NEA grant to present this multimedia concert in Worcester MA with band and chorus. Jim brings warmth and humor with his jazz and world music influenced songs. He’s visited over 700 UU Churches in 4 decades of travels and his songs are in our hymnbooks (“Gather the Spirit”\, “May Your Life Be as a Song”\, and more). Formerly a member of the Paul Winter Consort\, Jim was composer of their celebrated Missa Gaia/Earth Mass and sang their anthem song Common Ground. He has toured the world\, recorded nine CDs of original music\, published a growing line of choral works\, and created the Earth and Spirit Songbook\, an anthology of over 100 songs of Earth by many contemporary composers.
