SUMMARY:Making End of Life Decisions: What are the Options in Ohio?
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Lisa Vigil Schattinger\, MSN\, RN\, founder of Ohio End of Life Options (OELO); Ann Rowland\, retired Assistant US Attorney\, board member\, OELO. \n\n\n\nSeveral states have statutes permitting Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) for competent adults who are terminally ill. The speakers will review the laws nationwide and legislative efforts in Ohio.  Without a MAID law in Ohio\, what are the options for the terminally ill?  The speakers will discuss Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED)\, advance directives with dementia provisions\, and hospice care.  They will also discuss their thoughts about navigating end of life decision-making with loved ones based on their personal experiences.

SUMMARY:"Citizens not Politicians" Petition Signature Gathering Training
DESCRIPTION:GCC has committed to do our part in signature gathering for the proposed Ohio Constitutional Amendment to create a “Citizens not Politicians” method of re-districting by collecting 20\,000 signatures by mid May toward the statewide goal of 700\,000. \n\n\n\nYour UUCC GCC Core team has set a goal of gathering at least 400 signatures. One dozen of your fellow congregants have taken the training and signed out petition books. We have arranged for a convenient training for you after worship service on Sunday March 24 from 11:30-12:30 in rooms 106-108. \n\n\n\nThis will be our kick-off for our current Good Trouble campaign. Plan to attend the training\, sign out a petition book\, and collect signatures. We will have a list of public events you can collect signatures at\, or you can simply collect from neighbors\, friends\, and family. Each signature is as important as any other!! Help us meet our goal and create more justice in Ohio. Also: All are invited to the next Engage GCC meeting which will be IN PERSON at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church on Monticello on Thursday March 21 from 7-8:30pm. Questions? Ask a Core Team member: Laurie Albright\, Bev Austin\, Pat Dillard\, Greg Nosan\, Brandon Ruud\, Bob Staib\, Mark Weber\, and Randy Partain.

SUMMARY:UUs Together: Fair Wage Campaign OHIO!! virtual meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join UUs Together virtually this month to learn about the Fair Wage campaign in Ohio. Haven’t heard of it? All the more reason to join us. This is a proposed constitutional amendment\, currently gathering signatures (the same process as the anti-gerrymanding/fair districts campaign). Learn about this movement to raise the minimum wage (note: if the minimum wage had kept pace with inflation and increased worker productivity since 1968\, it would be over $24 an hour)\, and abolish the tipped wage\, among other things. \n\n\n\nWe will view a small portion of a very informative video\, and hear from Mariah Ross\, organizer for the Fair Wage campaign\, and Grace Heffernan\, Northeast Ohio Worker Center\, which partners with Collaborate Cleveland on the Pay Equity campaign. \n\n\n\nSee you on Monday March 25 from 7-8:30pm virtually!Bring your questions! \n\n\n\nTopic: UUs Together February meetingTime: Mar 25\, 2024 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86037193106?pwd=eTZkMUZHQXltSStabzhrdEY3blpmUT09 \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 860 3719 3106Passcode: 757500

SUMMARY:Immigrants: Burden\, Blessing\, Duty?
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: James Nichols\, and Dana Beveridge\, both Staff Attorneys\, Migration and Refugee Services\, Cleveland Catholic Charities.  \n\n\n\nMajor religions affirm a duty to the displaced. Our economy needs willing workers\, and we need the earnings of young workers to support our aging population. Yet the media focuses on the menace of unwelcome immigrants\, and support systems are overwhelmed by surges\, mostly from Latin America. It is not feasible for all those who’d like to move to America to do so. How should we respond?

SUMMARY:EngageGCC Planning Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Next EngageGCC Is April 25!We’re building momentum around the May 7th Pretrial Justice Action. EngageGCC is an important platform for getting the word out. That means our April 25th EngageGCC takes on particular importance. \n\n\n\nWe will meet Thursday\, April 25th\, at 7pm Lakewood Congregational Church\, 1375 W Clifton BoulevardLakewood OH \n\n\n\nNext Action: GCC’s Pre-Trial Justice Team is planning an action for May 7th at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church. \n\n\n\nThe 7pm action on May 7th will be in person and on Zoom.Turnout will be critically important. We want to send out a message of power to the community and its public officials! \n\n\n\nWhy are People in Jail Before Trial? Not for punishment because they have not been convicted. Most people are in jail before trial because:– They are too poor to pay bail.-They have mental health and/or addiction issues.-They were arrested for non-violent crimes. \n\n\n\nWhat’s wrong with jail before trial?-It violates the rule of law – the presumption of innocence and the constitution’s prohibition against excessive bail.-It harms individuals and their communities\, is costly\, and does not protect public safety. \n\n\n\nWhat are alternatives?-Providing pretrial services that:* Investigate and recommend alternatives to jail\, such as diversion and supervised release.* Ensure that people come to court for scheduled dates.* Help people to keep and/or get jobs\, housing\, families\, transportation\, and other resources.* Protect public safety because people are less likely to re-offend. \n\n\n\nWhy Should You Attend this Public Hearing?-You will hear how the pretrial process currently works in our County and learn research-based\, data-driven best practices for pretrial services and join other GCC and community members in publicly calling for a more just and effective pretrial system – to reduce jail before trial. You will learn how we can do better! Learn more here https://www.greaterclevelandcongregations.org/issues/pretrial-justice/; \n\n\n\nThank you!Your UUCC GCC Team

SUMMARY:Learning to Hate Democracy: The Rise of Right-Wing Organizations
DESCRIPTION:In person or on Zoom \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Matthew Lacombe\, Alexander P. Lamis Associate Professor in U.S. Politics\, CWRU. \n\n\n\nRight-wing\, MAGA-friendly “think tanks” such as the Claremont Institute\, the Heritage Foundation and the Cato Institute think equality is an unnatural state and democracy is for weaklings. Their influence can be seen in all aspects of national\, state\, and local government. \n\n\n\nIn Ohio\, the Buckeye Institute has been involved in many ultra-conservative initiatives such as promoting charter schools as a solution to high school drop-out rates. The Buckeye Institute is also an affiliate member of the State Policy Network (SPN). SPN is a web of right-wing think tanks and is the tip of the spear of far-right\, nationally funded policy agenda in the states that support extremists in the Republican Party.  \n\n\n\nWhat is the wave of right-wing think tanks? What can those who love democracy do to support our institutions?

SUMMARY:The Surprising Malcolm X
DESCRIPTION:UUCC will show the PBS documentary\, “Malcolm X: Make It Plain” and serve as host to several other area congregations who are actively engaged in promoting anti-racist perspectives and practices. One of the most pivotal figures of our time\, while Malcolm X articulated the global struggle against racism with profound clarity\, he was also\, surprisingly to many\, the soul and vision of fundamental human rights. Transcending the conversation beyond civil rights\, he promoted and demanded the recognition of our common humanity and the inherent worthiness and dignity of everyone\, both locally and globally. \n\n\n\nCome\, be surprised\, and engage with others who are doing their part to create more just and caring communities within their congregations and in society at large. There will be a brief intermission (with light refreshments) followed by a half hour of table discussion ending by 6:30. \n\n\n\nDoors open at 3:30.  The FILM STARTS PROMPTLY AT 4:00.    Pre- registration is highly recommended at kgrochau@gmail.com \n\n\n\nSponsored by: Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland; Community Church of Chesterland; Social Justice Ministry of Federated Church\, Chagrin Falls; and Racial Equity Buddies
