SUMMARY:The Year to Save the Earth - with Jim Scott
DESCRIPTION:“The Year to Save the Earth” – A Multimedia Experience by Jim Scott \n\n\n\nJoin us on Sunday\, September 22nd at 4:30 p.m. in Fellowship Hall for “The Year to Save the Earth”. Mixing powerful songs and beautiful projected images\, The Year to Save the Earth takes us from grieving to celebration and from protest to positive vision for the planet. Jim’s lyrical melodies and outspoken poetry celebrate our beautiful\, amazing\, and fragile world. While facing the urgency of the environmental crisis\, the program’s message is one of optimism with many invitations to join in the singing. These amazing songs challenge us to feel\, to learn and to act! \n\n\n\nProlific composer guitarist Jim Scott was awarded an NEA grant to present this multimedia concert in Worcester MA with band and chorus. Jim brings warmth and humor with his jazz and world music influenced songs. He’s visited over 700 UU Churches in 4 decades of travels and his songs are in our hymnbooks (“Gather the Spirit”\, “May Your Life Be as a Song”\, and more). Formerly a member of the Paul Winter Consort\, Jim was composer of their celebrated Missa Gaia/Earth Mass and sang their anthem song Common Ground. He has toured the world\, recorded nine CDs of original music\, published a growing line of choral works\, and created the Earth and Spirit Songbook\, an anthology of over 100 songs of Earth by many contemporary composers.

SUMMARY:UU's Together Virtually
DESCRIPTION:Hear ye Hear ye! \n\n\n\n Have you heard the buzz about the UUA Climate Justice Revival? Over 350 congregations across the country are utilizing the resources provided to create their own version of this national event. UUCC is offering: Saturday September 28 9-1 with snacks Sunday September 29 service at 10:15\, followed by Power Hour! You are welcome to join us. Here’s the registration link: https://uucleveland.org/uucc_event/2024-climate-justice-revival/ \n\n\n\n Our congregation will: Create a complex representation of the challenging realities and liberatory possibilities for climate justice in our unique context Develop a vision of a flourishing future Identify a clear set of potential actions that we can take to realize this vision Enable participants to understand their roles in the interdependent ecosystem of creating climate justice and collective liberation. What does this have to do with UUs Together? We will gather on Zoom on MONDAY SEPTEMBER 30 from 7-8:30 to debrief the weekend\, learn if there are actions all 3 congregations can participate in\, and help WSUU and SWUU have enough information to consider doing a revival\, perhaps around Earth Day 2025. At minimum\, it should be interesting to hear the impact of this relatively novel set of activities. To receive a zoom link\, please email Laurie at sunnyskies2023@yahoo.com

SUMMARY:The Threat of Christian Nationalism & Project 2025
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rev. Marvin McMickle\, Interim Senior Pastor\, First Baptist Church of Cleveland in Shaker; Pastor Emeritus\, Antioch Baptist Church\, Cleveland \n\n\n\nA group of white Christian evangelicals called Dominionists or Christian nationalists has expanded greatly from a few individuals more than 200 years ago. While they numbered 20% of Trump’s supporters in the 2016 Iowa caucus\, today they exceed 50%. They hold that America was founded as a Christian nation and that their version of Christianity should determine our laws\, media\, education\, economy\, arts\, entertainment and family. The New Apostolic Reformation is a growing subgroup. Its Appeal to Heaven flag has been flown at the office of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and the home of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.  \n\n\n\nWhat is Christian Nationalism and how is it connected to Project 2025?

Most groups meet in-person\, and some meet virtually\, with new ones forming all the time! \n\n\n\nSmall group sign-ups typically kick off in the Fall; but you can join an open group any time \n\n\n\nStop by Fellowship Hall after service on October 6 at 11:30 to learn more about what we have to offer \n\n\n\nCheck out our website for more information:   Read More

SUMMARY:The States of the Earth: An Ecological and Racial History of Secularization with Mohamed Amer Meziane
DESCRIPTION:You’re Invited:   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n“An extraordinary book. Mohamed Amer Meziane’s breathtaking analysis of the  making of fossil states opens to a new genre of history writing where the very layers of  earth’s riches are at its center.”  \n\n\n\n—Ann Laura Stoler\, author of Carnal Knowledge and Imperial Power\, Along the  Archival Grain  \n\n\n\nHow the disenchantment of empire led to climate change  \n\n\n\nWhile industrial states competed to colonize Asia and Africa in the nineteenth century\,  conversion to Christianity was replaced by a civilizing mission. This new secular impetus  strode hand in hand with racial capitalism in the age of empires: a terrestrial paradise was  to be achieved through accumulation and the ravaging of nature.  \n\n\n\nFar from a defense of religion\, The States of the Earth argues that phenomena such as  evangelism and political Islam are best understood as products of empire and  secularization. In a world where material technology was considered divine\, religious and secular forces both tried to achieve Heaven on Earth by destroying Earth itself.  \n\n\n\nVia Zoom – REGISTER: OCTOBER 9

However\, in our current world of rapid technological advancements and shifting societal norms\, the boundaries and implications of free speech are being tested like never before. SUMMARY:The Youth Academy OWL program looking for 7th-9th graders!
DESCRIPTION:Seeking your assistance in spreading the word that the Youth Academy of UUCC is offering the Our Whole Lives (OWL) program for 7th-9th graders. To facilitate the Our Whole Lives 7th-9th grade program as intended by the Unitarian Universalist Association it is recommended that we have at least 8 youth participants. Details in flyer. \n\n\n\nThey do not need to be members of UUCC to participate. If they are interested they should reach out to Youth Academy Program Coordinator\, Valerie Hura. Valerie.hura@uucleveland.org 216-307-3116. We are finding that word of mouth is the most effective way to promote the program so please TALK IT UP!

SUMMARY:Legacy Creation Team Educational Workshop: Planning for Your Future (and Ours!)
DESCRIPTION:So\, the thought about planning for your future flits through your mind on occasion\, whatever your age\, and you typically let the thought move away. After all\, it’s not urgent — maybe you think you’re too young to consider such issues\, maybe you’re older and the topic is morbid\, depressing\, too complicated\, or all of those things… so you duck the issue\, thinking\, “This can wait for another time.” \n\n\n\n Stop. We all know we’re just kidding ourselves when an issue of such significance is hanging out there and we just refuse to address it. But how do you even get started? There’s wills and powers of attorney and financial planning and goodness knows what else… \n\n\n\nTa da!! Your congregation’s Legacy Creation Team has just the thing for you. A one hour (yes\, only an hour\, promise) introductory Educational Workshop entitled\, “Planning for Your Future (and Ours!)”\, will be offered in Fellowship Hall following the service on Sunday\, November 17. Our very own Meg Pauken\, an expert on these matters\, will be the presenter. \n\n\n\nNo\, Meg is not going to speak for the entire hour. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions following the presentation. And\, yes\, whether you’re 29 or 92\, there’ll be plenty included in the presentation that will be relevant for your particular point in life. \n\n\n\nNo advance reservation needed\, no obligations when it’s over. Just show up and\, perhaps learn a thing or three. Hope to see you there! Contact any of us with questions. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n The Legacy Creation Team – Ray Gonzalez\, David Kantor\, Meg Pauken\, Lou Salza\, Nancy King Smith\, Melissa Vandergriff

SUMMARY:Pretrial Support Team Needs Your Immediate help!
DESCRIPTION:Our UUCC Pretrial Support Team needs your help. One of our clients is facing jail time if she does not make progress on clearing out the illegal dumping in the yard of the vacant house that her deceased father previously owned and she now owns. This case has been going on for over a year with no progress because our client is unable to do the work herself due to multiple health problems and she has no money to pay anyone else to do it. We hope the fine people of UUCC can help her. We are planning a work day for Saturday\, November 23rd to load up a dumpster and clear the property. We will have carpools leave the church at 10:30 and be back by 2 pm. Wear old clothes and work gloves. If you have a weed whacker\, bring it too. The house is in Slavic Village. Please let us know if you can help or want more information. Contact Pat Dillard at patdillard13@gmail.com or 216-408-0132\, or see me at coffee hour!”
