SUMMARY:Anti-Semitism: Beliefs and Facts
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Mark Weber\, Retired KSU Dean\, Library Services\, and Activist Leader of Jewish\, Secular and Labor Organizations. \n\n\n\nHatred of Jews\, Muslims and any other group is wrong. How can we combat anti-Semitic stereotypes and messages that are clearly inaccurate? Is reasoned criticism of the Israeli government’s policy to occupy the West Bank anti-Semitic? Let’s discuss.

SUMMARY:Food Insecurity Challenges & Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Darcy Freedman\, PhD\, Professor\, CWRU School of MedicineJulie Johnson\, CEO\, The Hunger Network. \n\n\n\nFood insecurity has increased since the pandemic\, with an estimated 226\,000 people hungry in Cuyahoga County in 2020. Food shortages and increases in food costs have made it difficult for the Cleveland Food Bank to supply distribution sites. Cleveland\, with its high level of poverty and food deserts\, has a higher rate of food insecurity than Ohio in general. A 21st century plan is a partial solution.

SUMMARY:Impact of Redlining & Hospital Closures
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Sadeer Al-Kindi\, MD\, Cardiologist\, University Hospitals. \n\n\n\nIn the 1930s\, banks began drawing red lines around neighborhoods that were at higher risk for defaulting on mortgage and business loans. Recent studies by Dr. Sadeer Al-Kindi and others at University Hospitals have shown long-term impacts on healthcare such as cardiovascular disease strokes and cancer in these redlined areas. In the last 15 years\, eight hospitals have closed in Cuyahoga County\, several very recently. Generally\, these hospitals have been in economically disadvantaged areas with significant Black and Hispanic populations. What is the expected long-term health impact of these hospital closures?

SUMMARY:Medicare Privatization
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: J.B. Silvers\, PhD\, CWRU Weatherhead School of Management and School of Medicine \n\n\n\nMedicare is being “privatized” via Medicare Advantage (MA)\, the corporate alternative to traditional Medicare. MA is publicly financed but run by private insurance corporations. The administrative cost of Medicare: 2%; MA’s administrative cost: 20-40%. MA is used by almost 50% of the Medicare population and accounts for 55% of total Medicare spending (427 billion). Is comprehensive reform on the way?

SUMMARY:Politics\, Policy & Economic Action
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mark Sniderman\, PhD\, CWRU Weatherhead School of Management\, former Executive Vice President\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\nThe Federal Reserve raised interest rates 5 times in 2022. How much more will the Fed need to raise interest rates to control inflation\, and where will that rate likely settle? What are the implications for long-term interest rates and mortgage costs? Will there be another housing bubble? If there is a recession in 2023\, how long and deep would it be? Did the Fed wait too long to raise interest rates? How much power does the Fed have to lower inflation given public expectations of future inflation? Was too much money injected into the economy during Covid? What will be the price rise on food\, energy\, housing and health care\, and when can we expect the stock\, bond markets and economy to stabilize?

SUMMARY:Book Discussion: Mistakes and Miracles
DESCRIPTION:UUCC Book Discussion\nMistakes and Miracles: Congregations on the Road to Multiculturalism\nSunday May 21\, 2023\n11:30 AM to 1:30 PM\nConference room\nlight lunch will be served\n\nWe will  discuss the UUA Common Read\n\nIf you haven’t been able to read (or get a copy of) the whole book\, you can prepare for the discussion\n1. Read Chapter Two\, “Common Threads\,”\n2. Read Suzanne Zilber’s summary below\n\n\n\n\n3. listen to the panel discussion with the authors available here\, https://www.uuabookstore.org/Mistakes-and-Miracles-P18521.aspx.\n4.  An audiobook version of Mistakes and Miracles is available through Hoopla\, a library app which is available to download through Google Play or the Apple Store.\n\n\n\nAmazon Description of the Book: \n\nWhat calls Unitarian Universalists to create multicultural\, antiracist Beloved Community? What do congregations need when they embark on this journey? What common threads run through their stories? \nNancy Palmer Jones and Karin Lin—a white minister and a lay person of color—share how five diverse congregations encounter frustrations and disappointments\, as well as hope and wonder\, once they commit to the journey. Mistakes abound. Miracles of transformation and joy emerge too. Extensively researched and thoughtfully written—with reflection questions at the end of each chapter—Mistakes and Miracles: Congregations on the Road to Multiculturalism will guide listeners to apply these stories to their own communities\, develop next steps\, and renew their commitment to this hard but meaningful work. \nSuzanne’s Summary:\nCommon Threads\nMistakes and Miracles: Congregations on the Road to Multiculturalism\nby Nancy Palmer Jones and Karen Lin (2019) Skinner House Books pp 30-32 \nIn the book Mistakes and Miracles\, they ask the following questions for congregations to consider to create multicultural\, anti-racist communities – \n1) Who has power in the here and now and who doesn’t? \n2) Who benefits and who doesn’t from hierarchical systems created long before we current strugglers were born? \n“Our Common Threads include most of the shared elements from the lists in earlier resources\, along with some of our own. No one congregation embodies all of these Common Threads\, and congregations almost never implement them fully. The Common Threads do not constitute a step-by-step-to-do-list. Congregations can enter into this work at multiple points; they can pick up one or more of these elements at any stage in their development. We witness most of these Common Threads. In sections that follow\, we look more closely at each one. \n* Intentionality: congregations ground their journey in an overarching goal or sense of call\, made explicit in their mission and vision. \n*Relationships\, Relationships\, Relationships: Building and tending to healthy relationships within the congregation and beyond are central to the work. \n* Leadership That’s Diverse\, Committed\, and Collaborative: Ministers\, staff\, and lay leaders are passionate champions for the multicultural\, antiracist mission. Whenever possible\, they represent a wide range of identities. \n* Education for Multicultural Competencies and Collaboratives: Ministers staff and lay leaders are passionate champions for the multicultural\, antiracist missions. Whenever possible\, they represent a wide range of identities. \n* Education for Multicultural Competencies and Antiracism: Through classes and trainings that speak to different generations\, congregants can name the impact of white supremacy culture and other oppressive systems of power and privilege. They explore the congregation’s history and the wider community in which they dwell in order to draw on strengths and reconcile mistakes from the past. \n* Institutionalized Structures That Support the Multicultural\, Antiracist Mission: Congregations adapt their governance and committee structures to make them more inclusive. They work to eliminate barriers to participation in leadership. \n* Multicultural is Multigenerational: Children\, youth\, young adults\, and adults workshop\, learn\, and grow together\, honoring their different styles and expectations of family life across racial\, ethnic\, and generational differences. \n* Worship that Speaks to the Heart and That Centers Diverse Voices\, Styles\, and Cultures: Worship in these congregations touches congregants’ hearts\, bodies\, and spirits as well as their minds. It includes music language\, and art from many cultural sources. Such inclusion is authentic and accountable because the congregation has relationships with people whose cultures are represented. \n*Social Justice and Community Engagement: The congregation works in partnership and solidarity with traditionally marginalized groups at the local\, state and national levels for justice and equity for all. Congregants – especially those from the dominant culture- know how to follow leaders of color as well as how to use their own power appropriately for change that benefits those at the margins. \n*Adaptability and Entrepreneurship: The work of creating multicultural\, antiracist Beloved Community keeps evolving. These congregations adapt their initial plans to meet changing times and contexts. They develop a gift for improvisation and joy. They are on the journey for the long haul. \n* A Willingness to Take Risks and to Feel Uncomfortable: Taking risks – especially risking ‘failure’ – creates discomfort in most congregational systems. Yet in the work of building multicultural\, antiracist Beloved Community\, if some folks are not uncomfortable\, then the congregation or community may not be moving into the areas that need the deepest change. \n* Patience\, Perseverance\, Courage\, and Humility: This work is messy\, and it never ends. Well-trained and well-intentioned people will keep making mistakes. Conflict is inevitable. Patience\, Perseverance\, courage\, and humility are prime habits of the heart in building multicultural\, antiracist Beloved Community. \n* A Palpable Aliveness and Love: Congregations on this journey have a sense of aliveness and enthusiasm for the work. Everyone has the chance to feel more whole and ‘seen’ in such communities. The spirit of love is palpable in the congregations that commit to this soul work. \nAll of these Common Threads are easier to grasp through story\, example\, and experimentation than through lecture and description. The following sections draw on wisdom and examples from a wide range of sources as well as on the lived experiences of the congregations we study.”

SUMMARY:Tour: Cleveland African American Civil Rights Trail
DESCRIPTION:Tour the three stops on the new Cleveland African American Civil Rights Trail with Aaron Fountain\, UUCC attendee and Cleveland Restoration Society Fellow who directed the installation. The tour\, sponsored by the Racial Justice Leadership Team\, will leave from the UUCC parking lot on Saturday\, May 13\, at 1 pm and will last about 3 hours. Reservations required at uucc.rjlt@uucleveland.org. \nThe award-winning Cleveland African American Civil Rights Trail is the first of its kind for a major northern American city. Through the installation of historical markers and a dynamic website\, the project commemorates ten sites that shaped the civil rights movement in Cleveland. The website (clevelandcivilrightstrail.org) provides visitors with longer writeups about the sites\, oral history interviews\, and multimedia content. As of April 29\, four markers are in the ground at their prospective locations\, but we will visit three of them on May 13th: \nThe Carl B. Stokes marker sits outside of City Hall and recognizes Stokes’ significant election as the first African American elected as mayor of a major American city. Cory United Methodist Church\, located in the Glenville neighborhood\, served as a hub for grassroots organizing and hosted prominent civil rights leaders that include Thurgood Marshall\, W.E.B. Du Bois\, Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and Malcolm X. The Ludlow Community’s marker commemorates a neighborhood that sits on the border of Cleveland and Shaker Heights and pioneered integrated housing during an error of blockbusting and redlining. \nThe tour will be led by Aaron G. Fountain\, Jr. formerly worked as the African American Cultural Heritage Fellow at the Cleveland Restoration Society from 2022 to 2023. Last year\, he completed a PhD in history at Indiana University in Bloomington\, Indiana. His research documents 1960s and 1970s high school student activism in the San Francisco Bay area. While enrolled\, he published articles and op-eds in various academic journals and media outlets. Currently\, he’s working on a book project related to his dissertation and works as a web content editor for the Smithsonian’s Museum of African American History and Culture. \nWe will meet at 1:00 in the church parking lot and will arrange cars to carpool.  Reservations required at uucc.rjlt@uucleveland.org by May 10. Contact Nancy King Smith or Suzanne Zilber for more information.

SUMMARY:FDR Musical Play: Aristocats
DESCRIPTION:Disney Musical\, The Aristocats\nSaturday\, May 20\, 2 pm\nFDR Academy\, 800 Linn Drive\, Cleveland 44108 \nThis year FDR is performing Disney’s “Aristocats”. UUCC support this year includes some hands-on and financial help with snacks\, scenery/ costumes\, providing a videographer\, and a cake for the cast party. Special recognition is due to our own Becky Burns\, who has been serving most ably and tirelessly since last fall as the Volunteer Music Director! \nThis is the fourth year that FDR has been selected for a prestigious grant to perform a Disney musical\, with assistance from Playhouse Square. Some of you may remember the fun in previous years of painting parties\, making costumes and props\, and attending performances at FDR. We know how participation in the arts can be a transformative experience\, and we’re glad to participate.

SUMMARY:GCC Delegate Assembly in Person
DESCRIPTION:After several years of being apart\, Greater Cleveland Congregations (GCC) will gather together in person!\nThursday May 25\, 2023\n7 PM\nImani United Church of Christ\n832 E 222nd Street\nEuclid\, Ohio 44123\nWe are excited about coming together again as a whole organization! In order to re-acquaint ourselves\, or make new acquaintances\, the assembly will include one-on-one gatherings along with house meetings\, where groups of leaders will sit together for a guided discussion. Once again our EngageGCC tri-chairs\, Marcia Levine\, Susan Reis and Willie Brown\, whose congregation is hosting the assembly\, will lead the meeting.\n\nAll are welcome to participate and you can sign up here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfJKts_OIwNLLF-Uu6HP91DuC9KomgKapEoYanIUI0AMz1zdw/viewform?usp=sf_link\n\nGCC Updates\nLast month\, leaders of the GCC Juvenile Bindover Team had an unprecedented meeting with all six of Cuyahoga County’s juvenile judges to establish a relationship and to express GCC’s deep concerns about the bindover of youth to adult court. As a result of the meeting\, the judges have invited GCC leaders to sit in on their courts and individual meetings with the judges will be scheduled to continue this extremely important dialogue.\n\n\nIn recognition of GCC leader Donna Weinberger‘s efforts\, the Alcohol\, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board has chosen Donna and GCC to receive a Helping Hands Award for their work as longtime advocates for reforming criminal justice systems and policies to include diversion efforts and education related to mental health and substance use disorders in Cuyahoga County. Congratulations to Donna and the team!\n\n\nLast month\, nine GCC staff and leaders joined eight other organizations in Washington\, DC to form a New Organizing Alliance and discuss how the group can work together to create change. At the meeting an interim structure was outlined\, leading eventually to the formation of a member-based collective that will leverage the expertise of each organization. The new organizing alliance will have two national trainings\, one this coming fall in Washington\, DC and one next spring in Cleveland.\n

SUMMARY:UU Taboos: Sin
DESCRIPTION:The words we use matter. But the words we don’t use matter too. \nI have been hoping to find a way to talk about words and what is wrapped up in them\, especially when our spirituality is at issue. Here’s my attempt at that: a set of conversations about some of the words we don’t use. And hopefully along with that\, a chance to enjoy one another’s company and some beautiful Summer evenings outdoors. \nBeing able to ask meaningful questions of ourselves requires looking at our assumptions\, biases and implicit feelings. And since we create brave space at UUCC\, I invite us to do just that about some of the big picture religious ideas that sometimes rattle around when we work on big ideas. \nWhat are these ideas that often show up as what we are trying NOT to do\, and NOT to be? What are our feelings about these ideas? What can we learn about ourselves by reflecting on our feelings? And how else may we understand these ideas? How can they challenge us? What can we learn by thinking with them as well as against them? \nThese conversations will have a particular structure. Its going to be a casual conversation. There’s no curriculum here. Instead\, the goal will be to invite those who join the conversation to express their feelings about one of our taboos. After we get those feelings out\, I’ll hope to give some wider context\, some other points of view that we might reflect on. After some discussion\, we’ll invite one another to express some new directions they could see for these taboo ideas that hopefully lead to more discussion. \nWe’ll be gathering on Sunday evenings in either the garden or on the East lawn\, unless weather chases us inside. I sincerely hope some fireflies join us.
