SUMMARY:Political Parties\, Polarization and the Future
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Jonathan Entin\, CWRU Professor of Law and Political Science; Ryan Claassen\, Political Science Professor\, Kent State University. \n\n\n\nWhat do the results of the November 2nd election mean? SUMMARY:Social Media\, the Internet\, and Technology: Monopolies vs Accountability
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Bryan Adamson\, CWRU Professor of Law. \n\n\n\nGAFAM (Google\, Apple\, Facebook\, Amazon and Microsoft). How does GAFAM’s power and size affect capitalism\, democracy\, and our personal lives? These companies measure our attention\, collect user data from us\, and lock in the means to get messages (including disinformation) into our consciousness via advanced technology and tailored ads. They’ve been immune to anti-trust laws and FTC investigations.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Akram Boutros\, M.D.\, CEO and President\, MetroHealth System \n\n\n\nCuyahoga County ranks 75th out of Ohio’s 88 counties in health outcomes. MetroHealth has transformed its healthcare system to address the social determinants of health. SUMMARY:The Pandemic and the Inflation Outlook
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Robert Rich\, Director\, Center for Inflation Research\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\nInflation has multiple impacts on our lives and communities\, and it has surged over the past year. The consumer price index\, a broad-based measure of inflation\, rose 6.8% last November\, the largest increase since 1982. The current elevated readings serve as a useful starting point for a review of what inflation is (and isn’t)\, how its ongoing strength is measured\, and the current supply and demand factors impacting inflation and our future.

SUMMARY:Fracking\, Radioactive Brine and Icy Roads
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Cheryl Johncox\, Fossil Fuels Organizer\, Sierra Club\, and Ted Auch\, Ph.D.\, Director\, FracTracker Alliance\, Great Lakes Program. \n\n\n\nThe brine that the fracking industry produces as waste is being used on Ohio’s roads as a de-icer. Limited testing indicates the brine contains radioactive concentrations that can pollute soil or become airborne as radioactive dust\, thus contaminating drinking water and agricultural products. This toxic radioactive waste is also disposed of in Class II Injection wells where it can also contaminate groundwater.

DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Adarsh Krishen MD\, MMM\, FAAFP\, Chief Medical Officer\, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio; Mary Schatzman RN\, gynecology\, Northeast Ohio Women’s Center \n\n\n\nWhat will the vulnerable do without Roe? A strong social safety net will be critical to helping women cope with an unintended pregnancy and delivery\, not to mention a newborn. It will be important to facilitate abortion access outside of Ohio for those who require it. Without Roe\, what’s available in our area to handle crises and provide support?

SUMMARY:Where Have All the (Affordable) Houses Gone?
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Sally Martin\, Director\, and Tim Kobie\, Manager\, Strategic Code Enforcement Initiatives\, both of Cleveland Building and Housing Department; Ayonna Blue Donald\, Vice President\, Ohio Market\, Enterprise Community Partners \n\n\n\nThe cost of purchasing a home has skyrocketed\, and rental costs have increased as well. It has become especially difficult to find affordable housing in marginalized neighborhoods\, where families sometimes choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table. SUMMARY:Midterm Elections: Meltdown\, Referendum or Party Switching?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Tom Sutton PhD\, Director\, Community Research Institute\, Baldwin Wallace University \n\n\n\nInflation\, gas prices\, guns violence abortion and democracy itself. All are on the ballot. The party that occupies the White House historically loses an average of 25 seats in the midterms. Gerrymandering is often the deciding factor. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kristin Hall\, Executive Director\, Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District; Judy Huichun Zhang\, Associate Professor\, Department of Civil Engineering\, CWRU \n\n\n\nLake Erie is an asset of Ohio that is taken for granted. Gov. DeWine signed into law HB 175 that exempts from pollution regulations of all Ohio tributaries not protected by the Clean Water Act. This action counters the Governor’s hallmark H2Ohio initiative\, which intends to reduce algae blooms and upgrade water service infrastructure. What are the risks?

SUMMARY:Food Insecurity Challenges & Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Darcy Freedman\, PhD\, Professor\, CWRU School of MedicineJulie Johnson\, CEO\, The Hunger Network. \n\n\n\nFood insecurity has increased since the pandemic\, with an estimated 226\,000 people hungry in Cuyahoga County in 2020. Food shortages and increases in food costs have made it difficult for the Cleveland Food Bank to supply distribution sites. Cleveland\, with its high level of poverty and food deserts\, has a higher rate of food insecurity than Ohio in general. A 21st century plan is a partial solution.

SUMMARY:Impact of Redlining & Hospital Closures
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Sadeer Al-Kindi\, MD\, Cardiologist\, University Hospitals. \n\n\n\nIn the 1930s\, banks began drawing red lines around neighborhoods that were at higher risk for defaulting on mortgage and business loans. Recent studies by Dr. Sadeer Al-Kindi and others at University Hospitals have shown long-term impacts on healthcare such as cardiovascular disease strokes and cancer in these redlined areas. In the last 15 years\, eight hospitals have closed in Cuyahoga County\, several very recently. Generally\, these hospitals have been in economically disadvantaged areas with significant Black and Hispanic populations. What is the expected long-term health impact of these hospital closures?

SUMMARY:Medicare Privatization
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: J.B. Silvers\, PhD\, CWRU Weatherhead School of Management and School of Medicine \n\n\n\nMedicare is being “privatized” via Medicare Advantage (MA)\, the corporate alternative to traditional Medicare. MA is publicly financed but run by private insurance corporations. The administrative cost of Medicare: 2%; MA’s administrative cost: 20-40%. MA is used by almost 50% of the Medicare population and accounts for 55% of total Medicare spending (427 billion). Is comprehensive reform on the way?

SUMMARY:Politics\, Policy & Economic Action
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mark Sniderman\, PhD\, CWRU Weatherhead School of Management\, former Executive Vice President\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland \n\n\n\nThe Federal Reserve raised interest rates 5 times in 2022. How much more will the Fed need to raise interest rates to control inflation\, and where will that rate likely settle? What are the implications for long-term interest rates and mortgage costs? Will there be another housing bubble? If there is a recession in 2023\, how long and deep would it be? Did the Fed wait too long to raise interest rates? How much power does the Fed have to lower inflation given public expectations of future inflation? Was too much money injected into the economy during Covid? What will be the price rise on food\, energy\, housing and health care\, and when can we expect the stock\, bond markets and economy to stabilize?
