SUMMARY:Resistance Fair 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Resistance Fair is a gathering of organizations and groups working every day to bring our values to life – protecting our democracy\, targeted communities\, our environment\, Immigration\, reproductive rights\, and the work of many non-profit organizations who serve us in meaningful ways.  As we look toward the next four years of attacks on all we hold sacred and meaningful\, now is the time to unify\, organize and act……together.  It’s important for all of us to know what is happening locally and what actions we can take proactively in a positive\, strategic way. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLocation: Cleveland Heights High School\, 13263 Cedar Rd. Cleveland Heights 44118. \n\n\n\nif you are a UUCC member planning to attend this Resistance Fair event\, please be mindful of opportunities for our congregation to partner with organizations beyond inviting individual volunteerism. Consider asking questions like\, “What does your organization need from community partners?”  \n\n\n\nAnd if the answer is that they just need more volunteers\, ask what specific commitments would be helpful. Do they need people to build houses\, send postcards\, or teach skills? The more you can bring back about the needs of organizations that impress you and align with our congregation’s values\, the more easily we can discern where fruitful relationships might be nurtured.

SUMMARY:Presidential Voting Systems: Is the Electoral College the Best Method?
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Robert Alexander\, PhD\, Political Science\, Founding Director\, Bowling Green State University Democracy and Public Policy Research Network \n\n\n\nThe US Constitution dictates the Electoral College must determine the President and Vice President. Thus\, each state has the same number of electors as members of Congress.  In 2000 and 2016\, the Presidential Election produced a winner via Electoral College votes but not popular votes.   There is\, however\, a variation in determining state electors.  Maine and Nebraska use a strategic population-based method to determine their electoral votes in each congressional district. Can their strategy be used in other states to create election winners based on the popular vote? Are there other possibilities? \n\n\n\nIn person in UUCC’s Fellowship Hall\, 21600 Shaker Blvd in Shaker Hts.or via ZOOM

SUMMARY:Mardi Gras Celebration -Fairmount Presbyterian Church
DESCRIPTION:Fairmount is hosting our annual Mardi Gras celebration on Tuesday\, March 4 from 5:30-7:30pm. We’ll have live music\, art\, dinner (gumbo and chicken+waffles)\, and a magic show. And YOU are invited! \n\n\n\nThis is an intergenerational\, interfaith community gathering. In other words\, everyone is invited—people of all faiths\, all ages\, all everything. \n\n\n\nThe one difference this year is that we’re branding the gathering as part of our “No Strangers Club.” We’re asking all guests to either leave their phones and other digital devices at home\, or to safely leave them at our secure “phone check” when they enter (and receive them back whenever they’re ready to leave). Because we believe the most meaningful connection happens when we put aside our biggest distraction. \n\n\n\nYou are receiving this invitation as a representative of your congregation/organization\, but please feel free to invite others to join as well! Everyone can register here.

Christians and Jews are calling for an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories and the liberation of the Palestinian people. \n\n\n\nPanelists will present historical contexts to better understand current political events. They will reflect on their own experiences. \n\n\n\nPresenters: Akshai Singh (Hindu nationalism)\, Sara Fadlalla (Cleveland Palestine Advocacy Community and Cleveland Sudan Network)\, Tommy Airey (former evangelical Christian now committed to radical discipleship)\, Rev. Reegie Bunch (Senior Pastor of Fifth Christian Church)\, Mara Layne (Jewish Voice for Peace). \n\n\n\nEmbodied Sanctuary \n\n\n\nWhat does sanctuary mean to you? How do we create a sanctuary for ourselves to stay grounded\, sustained\, nourished and rested as our most authentic and beautiful self? What does it mean to embody the work of liberation? How can that help us be sanctuary people for one another? \n\n\n\nWhen we say: “We keep each other safe\,” or\, “We take care of ourselves\,” what does that mean? How does that become tangible? \n\n\n\nHow do we assess our risks AND continue to take brave and courageous actions? What does this mean individually and as a collective of interdependent beings? \n\n\n\nWhat would it mean to rid the self of the need to dominate\, “be right\,” or “to win”? \n\n\n\nHow are we meeting this moment and refusing to allow each other to go uncared for in the face of these death machines? \n\n\n\nWhat is our relationship to land/reparations? How does this relate to our bodily autonomy? \n\n\n\nPresenters: Paul Edward Montgomery Ramirez (Committee of 500 Years of Dignity and Resistance)\, Dara Adkison (TransOhio)\, Suncere Shakur (Mutual Aid Disaster Relief)\, Tori Hamilton (immigration attorney) \n\n\n\nWisdom from the Future: Lessons from Student Organizers \n\n\n\nHow are today’s students making the interconnections of struggles? What organizing tactics are students using today? What new things are being brought to the movement? What concrete obstacles do they face at their institutions? What repressive experiences are they having? How are they transforming this trauma? Is there any silver lining to the repression and oppression they are experiencing? How can community residents become better allies? \n\n\n\nPresenters: to be announced \n\n\n\nLUNCH (included with registration fee): vegetarian and vegan. To minimize trash that goes to the landfill\, we will use compostable cutlery\, cups and plates. Thank you to Rust Belt Riders for helping us out! \n\n\n\nRESOURCE TABLES \n\n\n\nFAIR TRADE SALES support collectively-owned and democratically-managed cooperatives in Latin America\, providing vital income to artisan and farming families.

DESCRIPTION:Join UUs Together\, on Monday March 31 virtually at 7pm to dive into the excellent workshop last Saturday at UUCC. Join us to see how Love and Accountability can help us explore our 6 values!Wow\, what a great workshop on Saturday March 22 at UUCC! Happily we had 7 people from UUCC there. If you saw the service on Sunday\, you got a hint of what was shared. I especially appreciated the frame that Renee Ruchotske offered. She took the two (perhaps) most controversial terms in our new Article II\, and used them to help us think about our 6 values (Justice\, Equity\, Transformation\, Pluralism\, Interdependence\, and Generosity). Attendees were from Pittsburgh\, West Virginia\, Youngstown\, Akron\, East Shore\, SWUU\, and more. Here are three lines (17-19) from the meaty section on Values and Covenant. I have highlighted the terms:Love is the power that holds us together and is at the center of our shared values. We are accountable to one another for doing the work of living our shared values through the spiritual discipline of Love.UUs Together\, meeting virtually on Monday March 31st from 7-8:30pm will dive into the Saturday workshop with you! In addition to the stalwart people from SouthWest UU\, West Shore UU\, and UUCC\, we may also have a few folks from East Shore and Akron\, who also attended the workshop. Those of us who attended look forward to sharing this\, as well as some great poetry that was created by a group process\, and other reflections.
