SUMMARY:UU Taboos: Dogma
DESCRIPTION:The words we use matter. But the words we don’t use matter too. \nI have been hoping to find a way to talk about words and what is wrapped up in them\, especially when our spirituality is at issue. Here’s my attempt at that: a set of conversations about some of the words we don’t use. And hopefully along with that\, a chance to enjoy one another’s company and some beautiful Summer evenings outdoors. \nBeing able to ask meaningful questions of ourselves requires looking at our assumptions\, biases and implicit feelings. And since we create brave space at UUCC\, I invite us to do just that about some of the big picture religious ideas that sometimes rattle around when we work on big ideas. \nWhat are these ideas that often show up as what we are trying NOT to do\, and NOT to be? What are our feelings about these ideas? What can we learn about ourselves by reflecting on our feelings? And how else may we understand these ideas? How can they challenge us? What can we learn by thinking with them as well as against them? \nThese conversations will have a particular structure. Its going to be a casual conversation. There’s no curriculum here. Instead\, the goal will be to invite those who join the conversation to express their feelings about one of our taboos. After we get those feelings out\, I’ll hope to give some wider context\, some other points of view that we might reflect on. After some discussion\, we’ll invite one another to express some new directions they could see for these taboo ideas that hopefully lead to more discussion. \nWe’ll be gathering on Sunday evenings in either the garden or on the East lawn\, unless weather chases us inside. I sincerely hope some fireflies join us.

SUMMARY:FaCT Speaker Series: “Coal and Empire: The Birth of Energy Security in Industrial America”
DESCRIPTION:VIA  ZOOM  Sunday\, July 30th at 8:00 p.m. ET \n\n\n\n“Coal and Empire: The Birth of Energy Security in Industrial America” \n\n\n\nCoal and Empire offers an intellectual feast for both historians and modern energy scholars. Meticulously researched and expertly written\, it attempts to show how an energy fuel\, in this instance coal\, became an integral part of United States national security in the nineteenth century.―Technology and Culture \n\n\n\nRegister for this Zoom Event: REGISTER \n\n\n\nOr to register visit: www.factohio.org/dist-speak \n\n\n\nPeter Schulman\n\n\n\nCoal and Empire: The Birth of Energy Security in Industrial America   \n\n\n\nThe fascinating history of how coal-based energy became entangled with American security. \n\n\n\nSince the early twentieth century\, Americans have associated oil with national security. From World War I to American involvement in the Middle East\, this connection has seemed a self-evident truth. But\, as Peter A. Shulman argues\, Americans had to learn to think about the geopolitics of energy in terms of security\, and they did so beginning in the nineteenth century: the age of coal. \n\n\n\nCoal and Empire insightfully weaves together pivotal moments in the history of science and technology by linking coal and steam to the realms of foreign relations\, navy logistics\, and American politics. Long before oil\, coal allowed Americans to rethink the place of the United States in the world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReview:Fast-paced\, engaging\, and accessible\, Coal and Empire reveals how the extraction and use of coal was intertwined with domestic and international politics\, economics and world trade\, and innovations in science\, mathematics\, and technology. Historians of technology and energy will naturally appreciate the book\, but the easy-to-digest writing style and broad analysis will also interest readers beyond academia. Shulman’s book has wonderful potential to become a valued and well-read treatise. \n\n\n\n— Richard F. Hirsh \n\n\n\nZoom participants will be eligible to win a copy of Coal and Empire

SUMMARY:FaCT distinguished speaker series “American Canopy: Trees\, Forests\, and the Making of a Nation”
DESCRIPTION:“American Canopy: Trees\, Forests\, and the Making of a Nation” \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE for THIS ZOOM EVENT: \n\n\n\n“American Canopy:Trees\, Forests\, and the Making of a Nation”By Erik RutkowWriter\, Lawyer\, Historian Read more about the book and author \n\n\n\nThis fascinating and groundbreaking work tells the remarkable story of the relationship between Americans and their trees across the entire span of our nation’s history. \n\n\n\nFrom the Book Jacket: Like many of us\, historians have long been guilty of taking trees for granted.  Yet the history of trees in America is no less remarkable than the history of the United States itself–from the majestic white pines of New England\, which were coveted by the British Crown for use as masts in navy warships\, to the orange groves of California\, which lured settlers west…. America–if indeed it existed–would be a very different place without its millions of acres of trees. As American Canopy shows\, trees were essential to the early years of the republic and indivisible from the country’s rise as both an empire and a civilization.  As symbols of liberty\, community\, and civilization\, trees are perhaps the loudest silent figures in our country’s history….  Today\, few people think about where timber comes from\, but most of us share a sense that to destroy trees is to destroy part of ourselves and endanger the future.
