Tom McKenna – Testimonial

My name is Tom McKenna and I joined what was then First Unitarian and is now UUCC in1986 after first becoming a Unitarian Universalist in 1984. I was raised Roman Catholic but split from that as a teenager and didn’t think any kind of organized religion would work for me. Obviously, I was a deluded teen and now as a long-time UU, being  a member of UUCC is a major part of my life.

I served on the Future Facility Task Force which worked with the architectural consultants on developing the conceptual designs for proposed renovations to our Shaker Heights building. While the heart of UUCC is our people and the many ministries and programs that support our individual and collective search for truth, meaning, justice and love, I strongly believe that our 70+ year old building needs the proposed renovations to enable us to be even more welcoming, safe, efficient and supportive of these endeavors.

I am serving now as part of the steering committee and the chair for the first/advance phase of the Capital Campaign. It has been humbling and enlightening to work with our congregation members as we explain and discuss what is needed from all of us to reach the ambitious financial threshold required to make these renovations become a reality. I have been heartened by the thoughtful and supportive discussions we’ve had during all the visits I have made thus far with congregational members. This has truly reinforced the feeling I’ve always had about the caring community that is the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland.

Please join us as we stretch ourselves to make our building the place that will better enable future generations of UUCC members, families and communities to safely discover their version of life’s truth and meaning.
