UU Values Revision Continues

Dear UUCC Members and Friends,

UUCC has been asked to support the discussion of proposed amendments to the Final Proposed Revision to Article II of the UUA Bylaws. The first proposed amendment would change wording of the Equity Value (click here for details) and is supported by UUCC delegates to the 2023 UUA General Assembly (GA). The second would add an eighth Value: “Peace” (click here for details), and was recommended for consideration by a UUCC congregant.  We need to decide together whether our congregation should support these proposals for consideration at GA in June.

There will be information and discussion sessions occurring through mid-January which will be detailed below and in the weekly newsletter, followed by an online congregational survey.

Recap of The Article II Revision Process

Our congregation and UUs across the nation are in the process of reviewing and possibly revising Article II of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Bylaws, which contains the Purposes, Principles and Sources, Inclusion, and Freedom of Belief. This process must be completed every 15 years according to the bylaws of the UUA. Most of that work has been completed and we have been practicing living into the newly articulated Values.

However, there are still limited possibilities for changes through the “Article II revision votes” process.  For a revision to be considered at the June 2024 UUA General Assembly it must be approved as worthy of consideration by at least 15 congregations. These amendments, with documentation of support by 15 congregations, must be submitted to the UUA by February 1.

A congregation can approve consideration of an amendment either by actions of their governing board or congregation. Supporting an amendment for consideration does not necessarily imply support of the amendment, only the judgment that it should be considered at General Assembly in June

Scheduled opportunities for discussion of the proposed amendments are:

Links to the proposed amendments are above and will be available on the UUCC website. We invite you all to participate in the ongoing process of articulating our faith as Unitarian Universalists.
