UUCC Democracy in Action Update

6-Month Review

On February 8, 2026, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland unanimously approved a Board-endorsed version of the UUSJ resolution Faithful Defiance for Democracy:  A Call to Action. This resolution confirmed our congregation’s commitment to resisting authoritarianism and supporting democracy, empowering the UUCC Democracy in Action Team to act and speak for the congregation on this critical issue.

Since then, the Democracy in Action Team has organized:

  • An email list to publicize local opportunities for engagement among people who are looking for ways to get more involved in the larger community
  • Sign-making parties at UUCC for No Kings rallies
  • Carpooling/train rides from the UUCC parking lot to No Kings rallies
  • Attended a conference of lawyers on election integrity

Call to Action

As the mid-term elections approach, both federal and local legislators are attempting to make it more difficult to vote. Ohio has passed a law enacting stricter voter ID requirements that are in line with the federal SAVE Act. In November, there will be a ballot question attempting to add these stricter requirements to the Ohio state constitution. It is much harder to change the constitution than it is to repeal a harmful law. As you may know, changing the state constitution requires a statewide referendum. We do NOT want voter suppression provisions added to our state constitution!

The UUCC Democracy in Action Team is planning to spend the next 3 months educating folks about the dangers of this constitutional amendment, and opportunities for voter registration and citizen engagement. We will find fun ways to alert folks to the changes that have been made to our voting laws that will make it harder for many people to vote in the future. We will fight the fear tactics, the lies about the prevalence of voter fraud, and the restriction of access to voting. We need your engagement! Join us! Our next meeting will be on Sunday, August30  in Fellowship Hall at 11:45-12:15pm  following the service.
