Food for Our Minds and Spirits: Longing To Belong

Eddie Vedder + ukulele = musical joy

Our mantra this month is “I have people, and they love me.” Love is a funny word. So often, especially in pop culture, it is a way of talking about romance. But love is also something among friends, between family, and it knits communities together. Some sense of our idea of “belonging” is wrapped up in a place where we feel loved.

Thinking about these ways in which love and belonging intertwine with one another, I thought of a song that brings a sense of comfort in my own need to belong. Eddie Vedder––best known as a grunge rocker with Pearl Jam––accompanied by a ukulele is just unexpected enough to make this delightful. And it leads to a love song that is about not only the love, but the desire to be loved. I think this is meant to be more of a pop “love song.” But maybe it’s more than that? In any case, its always nice to have something to listen to on a Thursday evening. So take an earful if you like!
