This June the UUA delegates voted for congregations to engage in actions to stop the construction of a $90 million militarized urban warfare training complex known as “Cop City,” in the heart of a predominantly Black neighborhood in Atlanta. The construction of the Cop City campus requires the destruction of 381 acres of land in one of Atlanta’s largest remaining green spaces, known as Welaunee Forest, an area the Atlanta Planning Department dubbed one of the “four lungs” of Atlanta because it is a green space vital for the environmental health of the city and its residents.
The backers of this proposal are the Atlanta Police Foundation, in partnership with the Atlanta City Government and a committee of more than 40 corporate donors.

The deadline for collecting signatures is August 21 to put repealing the lease for Cop City on the ballot in November as a referendum.
