Food for Our Minds and Spirits: Charging the Mound

At this year’s Little League regional championships, a very standard baseball event occurred: a batter was hit by a pitch, he was shaken up, and after he took his base, he confronted the pitcher on the mound. In professional baseball, so often this would be a bench-clearing moment, with both teams attacking one another and many trying to restrain those who were fighting. That has certainly been modeled for kids playing in the Little League systems that gathered for the Southwest regionals this week.

But, in this case, the young players did a much better job modeling for their adult peers than the other way around. The scenario embodies the best things that can happen when young people play sports and it reminds me, at least, how much good kindness and empathy can do even in scenarios where hurt and pain are very real.
