Food for Our Minds and Spirits: Eye in the Sky

This month, something extraordinary will happen – the James Webb Telescope, which has been part of a very long, very circuitous planning process that has delayed it for more than a decade, will launch.

There are all kinds of issues you could point to in this thing coming to existence. It is very very expensive. It is part of a corrupt and excruciating political process. It was recently dropped, which is about the stupidest thing that could happen to a piece of expensive space technology.

But, ignoring all of that, this thing is amazing and extremely exciting, especially for those of us who seek to explore and learn and understanding. First off, this thing is orbiting from SUBSTANTIALLY beyond the moon! So far away that it can’t be repaired or maintained. But as a result it will be able to capture images like none before. In fact, it is sure to allow us to understand the foundations of our universe in ways we could never have understood before. And that’s not such a small deal to accomplish, even if it took an extra decade to get there.
