Food for Our Minds and Spirits: The Courage To Create

Watch this video here!

I liked Ethan Hawke a lot, even before he portrayed John Brown in a fantastic TV Show adaptation of the book The Good Lord Bird. But his communication about art and creativity in a notable talk is one of the best recent expressions of why something that feels non-urgent can be the most urgent thing in the world.

The fact is that creation is one of the most extraordinary things that we do––it is authentically personal and deeply enriching to the world. And a lot of things happen in our lives that give us reasons not to create, to express, to put out into the world something of ourselves. And so we find that need for courage, the courage to make something, to express something, to be authentically you in a way that is outside of the internal machinations of your own mind.

I love how Hawke emphasizes this courage in the video above. He invites you to follow your passions, but also to “play the fool.” That is where this courage lies. Not only in grandiose commitments, but in the courage not to protect ourselves, to quiet ourselves, to expose ourselves. His words remind us that if being laughed at is all the cost there is to creative self-expression, it is well worth the price.
