GCC Pushes County Council for Pretrial Services

Pretrial Justice Team Pushes County Council to Fund Pretrial Services to Keep People out of Jail 

Dozens of GCC leaders were part of a crowd of 75 people that attended Tuesday June 20th County Council meeting to call on County Executive Ronayne and Council members to rethink prioritizing a new jail over other public services.

Rev. Jawanza Colvin, Rev. James Cruz, Pat Dillard and Louise McKinney presented GCC’s case for building a new system of criminal justice, particularly providing pretrial services that keep people out of jail who have been arrested, but not convicted of a crime, and are not a danger to public safety.

The Cuyahoga County jail currently sits in downtown Cleveland, but new legislation introduced to County Council on June 20, 2023, proposes moving it to Garfield Heights. (Kaitlin Durbin, cleveland.com)
