Icicles and insulation

Quick Tips from UUCC Climate Urgency:

Was your home covered with lovely icicles this past winter?
if so this may be a sign that you need more insulation in your house.

Recent research shows that 89 percent or 9 out of 10  U.S. single-family homes are under-insulated, decreasing comfort while increasing energy costs for homeowners. About 70% of our heat loss goes up into the attic. To Prevent air leaks and wasted money on energy utility costs, insulation is crucial for preserving heat during the cold weather.

In addition to insulating the attic, in some houses the walls can be insulated as well as sealing around bathroom fans, chimneys, anything that protrudes from the floor below up into the attic to prevent warm air from infiltrating into the attic causing heat loss.

What can you do?
1. Check with your gas provider, such as Enbridge, they continue to offer help with Free weather-stripping, Attic and sidewall insulation, Door sweeps, and other insulation devices for qualified customers. see link for Enbridge program. Who is your provider? Contact them
2. Check for local contractors that provide insulation services. The IRA (inflation Reduction Act) subsidies and rebates are no longer available but we can still try to decrease wasted energy.
3. An energy audit can help identify where your house could use extra insulation

As UU’s the Climate Urgency Team is committed to our principles and values which call for us to decrease our carbon foot print and decrease our reliance on carbon based fuel when we can.
