There is a small group in the UUCC community where you can meet hundreds of new friends and have friendships that last a lifetime. You can go places you’ve never been before. This can all be done with 26 little letters combined in thousands of different ways to provide magic and relaxation. Who couldn’t use some distraction and entertainment in their lives? Reading fiction can provide that.
As a group, we recognize the amazing power of the imagination. Bibliotherapy uses an individual’s relationship to the content of books as therapy. It has been proven effective in the treatment of depression. Scientists call the capacity of our brains to construct a map of other people’s intentions ‘theory of mind’, and narratives offer a unique opportunity to engage this capacity. We identify with characters’ longings and frustrations, guess at their hidden motives and track their encounters with friends and enemies, neighbors and lovers.
Each month, we will vote as a group on the book to read and discuss for the next month. We will read some classic literature and some new books just for entertainment or escape. Reading fiction gives us the optimism and the hope that our tiny reading lights can be enough to start covering our entire horizon.
This group generally meets the last Monday of the month at 7:00 in the library at the church. (December 2023 will be an exception)
