Food for Our Minds and Spirits: New Life for an Old Idea

One of the great things about being a UU is that you are empowered to be a fan of ideas without having to worry about deciding on one over another. Built into the UU principles is a high value for being able to entertain and understand ideas without excluding other ideas. So when an old idea like “panpsychism”–the notion that consciousness is shared among all things in the world–comes back into conversation, it’s a reason to lean in.  (You can read about it at length here.)

This idea that even our inanimate objects of everyday life share in consciousness is becoming more real among philosophers and thinkers who are breaking down some of the rationalistic and materialist assumptions of the Enlightenment. (Here’s a good example from Salon.com.) The dimensions of the conversation remind me–speaking only for myself–how anyone who feels like they understand how the world works, what the universe is, and what our place is in it is, they can’t possibly see the whole picture. The search for truth continues and continues.

Sometimes it is hard to tap into our spiritual selves or find time to nurture our intellectual curiosity. Here is a section that reflects on some nourishing materials from around the web and related media channels in order to get us thinking, get us feeling, and get us reflecting on the lives we are living in this big, beautiful world. **Some Adult/Mature Themes May Appear in Links and Other Attached Material**
