Suppose there is no such thing as a mistake. Suppose things happen, and it is our response that makes a thing purposeful. Suppose everything we do has a good potentiality to it. Suppose everything can be shaped to the good.
That sounds like a nice world to live in, but not one I can often imagine. I make mistakes all the time. I make mistakes with people, with moments, with my own thoughts and ideas. It’s easy to make a move or say a thing or do something that you immediately know is a mistake. But wouldn’t it be amazing if something could swoop in and redeem a mistake you had made?
Herbie Hancock has a story that shows what this might be like. It’s a reflection on a time when he was playing with Miles Davis and a mistake turned into something beautiful. Jazz has a lot of lessons to teach us, but the potentiality for grace in the world may be one of its most profound ones.
A question we might chew on this week is, do you ever wonder at the way a good thing comes out of a bad thing? What does it tell the deepest stirrings in your soul about life and purpose and what it means for a thing to be good? If you have some time to sit with this question, you might spend some time with the music. Here’s a place to start, if you’re new to it!
Sometimes it is hard to tap into our spiritual selves or find time to nurture our creativity and intellectual curiosity. Here is a section that reflects on some nourishing materials from around the web and related media channels in order to get us thinking, get us feeling, and get us reflecting on the lives we are living in this big world. **Some Adult/Mature Themes May Appear in Links and Other Attached Material**
