Virtual Town Hall on COVID-19 Vaccine Attracts over 300 Attendees

A virtual town hall that focused on the COVID-19 vaccine and addressed concerns around accessibility, resources and support within Cleveland’s African-American faith community attracted over 300 attendees Sunday afternoon. The town hall featured medical professionals, scientists, community stakeholders and faith leaders who provided critical information, important data and responses to questions from those in attendance.

Topics included:

  • Background on GCC’s Color of Health Initiative
  • The current context of African-Americans and COVID-19
  • The history of African Americans and Public Health
  • The science around the COVID-19 virus and vaccines
  • The myths and misconceptions about vaccines
  • The impact of African Americans not getting vaccinated

At the end of town hall, attendees committed to organizing with GCC to end COVID-19 disparities in infection and vaccine rates in Cuyahoga County and state by:

  • Making church buildings testing and vaccination sites
  • Having communities receive federal, state and local allocated resources to rebuild communities and neighborhoods most severely impacted by COVID-19
  • Organizing small group discussions in congregations and/or communities

In a a poll taken at the conclusion of the event, 144 attendees said that the town hall helped them decide to take the COVID vaccine.

GCC also announced that we will have vaccine pop-up sites at Affinity Missionary Baptist Church this Saturday, March 6th, and at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church this Sunday, March 7th. More information will be forthcoming.
