Early Successes with Rainbow Youth Ministry Outreach

The Community of Rainbow Affirming Youth (RAY)
A Ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland

The four-month pilot of the Community of Rainbow Affirming Youth (RAY) is already showing meaningful impact. As the group prepares for its fourth gathering on Friday, April 17, a dedicated team of about twelve adults and one youth leader has been working collaboratively to build a strong foundation for this ministry.

Together, the team has developed thoughtful systems to ensure that:

  • the space is welcoming and affirming
  • youth are well-fed and cared for
  • communication reaches the broader community
  • facilitators are trained and supported in their work

Building Community with Care and Intention

Programming has been led by Valerie Hura of Endeavor Personal Growth, LLC, in partnership with Jenni Papp and the RAY team. Each monthly gathering offers engaging, relevant activities for LGBTQ+ youth and allies ages 12–18 from UUCC and the wider community.

These gatherings are designed to create a safe, affirming, and joyful environment where young people can:

  • connect with peers
  • build social and emotional skills
  • deepen their sense of belonging and self-acceptance

Growing Participation and Positive Feedback

In just three months, RAY has welcomed twelve youth, with new participants joining each month. Feedback from youth and families has been overwhelmingly appreciative, highlighting the importance of having a space grounded in care, affirmation, and thoughtful programming.

How You Can Support RAY

As the pilot phase comes to a close, the team is seeking ongoing support to sustain and grow this vital ministry.

This Sunday, April 19, RAY will be the shared collection plate recipient.
We invite you to contribute as you are able.

Additional ways to support include:

  • Grant research and applications
  • Providing monthly meals or snacks (perhaps through your small group)
  • Connecting RAY with potential partner organizations or programs that you are connected with.
  • Helping prepare the youth space:
    • sewing floor pillows
    • assisting with cleaning and setup of Room 106 for summer decorating

If you’re able to help in any of these ways, please reach out to Jenni Papp.

This is a ministry rooted in belonging, care, and community—and it is already making a difference.
