Food for Our Minds and Spirits: Doodle

Most of the doodles I come across these days are in the form of requests about what days of the week I’m available for a certain meeting. “Doodle” is one of those words that the tech world has stolen from us for use as something else. But this one also points to the loss (or close to it) of something else that used to be an unacknowledged part of the world. I’m sure I used to doodle. Now that I type so much, its hard to think of the last time I did anything like doodle.

Maybe that’s a real loss, because doodling has been with us since at least we’ve been writing. Here’s a page from a young, Jewish student learning the (Hebrew) alphabet in Egypt 1000 years ago.

Its extraordinary to think of an experience like doodling that doesn’t matter at all in our day to day experience, but which actually links us to people we could never hope to meet. It makes me want to make sure I keep some paper around––maybe the zen-like, playful instinct to put pen to page with only part of mind on what I’m doing. I’m gonna guess that there’s something important going on there.

Sometimes it is hard to tap into our spiritual selves or find time to nurture our intellectual curiosity. Here is a section that reflects on some nourishing materials from around the web and related media channels in order to get us thinking, get us feeling, and get us reflecting on the lives we are living in this big, beautiful world. **Some Adult/Mature Themes May Appear in Links and Other Attached Material**
