Fantastic Fungi
The turnover of popular media can be dizzying. Just as a certain movie or album or TV show appears it gains a wave of popularity and then we’re off to another thing. Mostly, it can seem like the same thing over and over again.
But every once in a while, something peeks up above the fray and the unexpected becomes mainstream and it gets into the culture. Its extraordinary when this kind of thing happens, and it makes for an especially interesting world. This happened recently with a documentary about mushrooms that’s been on Netflix for 3 years, and it was re-discovered during COVID and now has become a quiet phenomenon.
I won’t even try to explain how interesting mushrooms are — there are MANY other people who would make this case better than I could. And this documentary does exactly that. But it does so with visuals and big-concept explanations that make you take a step back and realize just how web-like, just how interconnected our world is.
I can’t say how much Fantastic Fungi is worth the watch — but if you appreciate gaining a whole new perspective on the world, seeing things from a mushroom’s eye view is well worth the try!
