There’s a long-practiced bit of religious superstition that I confess to finding quite charming. In the Christian tradition it is called Lectio Divina, and it describes the act of opening a book, especially a holy book, to a random page and using that page as a message or signal from God. It is a tradition based on the idea that God might communicate using something ordinary and mundane.
Now, I don’t take this as seriously as a religious practice, but what I will say is that I love fortune cookies and the way they turn into this kind of practice, except with very low stakes. As a result, I have a stack of fortunes that have been particularly meaningful, usually with a piece of wisdom that felt timely or deep or just insightful.
I came across this stack the other day, and I found that they weren’t all as great as I remember, so I was getting rid of them, until this one gem showed up. It read: “Grab ahold of knowledge, for knowledge will not grab a hold of you. And there is nothing more valuable that could slip through your hands.” That one was a keeper, and I’ve held onto it. Can’t remember what food it was that came with it, but holding onto knowledge is an idea worth keeping around.
