Joan Orr died. She was one of the charter members of the UUCC book group when it began back in 2004. We will miss her.
Long, LONG time member of UUCC (and First U before that) Joan Orr passed away on Wednesday, July 10. Joan was 98-years old. She tirelessly educated those younger than her on the correct 2-syllable pronunciation of her name – like Joanne, not the one syllable Joan. She assured us that if we looked it up in the dictionary, we would find this alternate spelling/pronunciation.
Joan joined First Unitarian on January of 1964, spending her early years bringing her four children to RE, and teaching in the RE program. Later she sang in the choir, served on the membership and newcomer committees, facilitated professors offering classes at the church for congregants, participated in the Sunday night book group, a multitude of covenant groups, and certainly more that a quick brainstorm didn’t bring up.
Joan was curious and loved learning new things, seeing new places, getting to know new people. She was an avid traveler – abroad and in the US, even solo-trips in her camper when she was in her 90’s.
Joan was a delightful person. UUCC is blessed to have had her as one of us.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
