Save the date! Emma’s Revolution will be at UUCC for Ingathering on September 10th!
If you were at General Assembly in Pittsburgh this June, you might have had the chance to hear some great music from Pat Humphries and Sandy O, better known as Emma’s Revolution. If you didn’t catch them at GA, all you need to do is come to church on Sunday, September 10th, because Pat and Sandy will be right here at UUCC providing very special music before and during our Ingathering/Water Communion Service that morning. The music from Emma’s Revolution will start around 9:40 that morning and continue right through our worship service. Don’t miss this very special musical treat!
Music Notes – Sunday, August 20th:
This Sunday’s musician is UUCC Pianist Karin Tooley
Opening Hymn: O Brother Sun – Scottish folk melody, adapted text from St. Francis of Assisi
#1066 in our Singing the Journey hymnbook,” O Brother Sun” is based on the “Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon” by St. Francis of Assisi. Sharon Anway adapted the poem into the lyrics found in our hymnbook and set them to the Scottish tune “Ye Banks and Braes”. This musical setting was first performed in October of 2002 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Cedar Falls, IA, where Sharon is director of Music Ministry and Composer-in-Residence, and hosts an annual St. Francis Day service that includes blessing of the animals. (includes material from uua.org)
Centering Music: Bless the Beasts and Children – Botkin & De Vorzon
Composed as the theme song for the 1971 film of the same name, “Bless the Beasts and Children” was written by professional songwriters/record producers Perry Botkin Jr. (1933-2021) and Barry De Vorzon (b. 1934). The song was recorded by the popular American soft-rock duo The Carpenters and achieved modest success as a single.
Offertory music: Tranquil Mountain with Birds Singing – Traditional Chinese melody, arr. Tooley
“Tranquil Mountain with Birds Singing” is a traditional folksong, believed to have originated in the Hunan province of China. The arrangement and performance of this song featured on Sunday are both by UUCC Pianist Karin Tooley.
Closing Hymn: A Place in the Choir – Staines
“A Place in the Choir”, also known as “All God’s Critters” is a song by American folk musician Bill Staines (1947-2021), who remained active as a songwriter and touring musician in his native New England into his seventies. “A Place in the Choir” has been recorded by dozens of artists, including Peter, Paul and Mary, The Browns, and Celtic Thunder.
Postlude: Dance of the Little Swans (Danse des petits cygnes) – Tchaikovsky
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) was a composer of the Romantic period and remains the most universally celebrated and recognized Russian composer of all time. Although Tchaikovsky famously composed symphonies, operas, and many other musical forms, he is best-remembered today for his ballet scores. Tchaikovsky only wrote three ballets in his lifetime, but all three have earned a place among the best-loved ballet scores by any composer: Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Swan Lake. “Dance of the Little Swans” (“Danse des petits cygnes”) comes from act two of Swan Lake and is one of Tchaikovsky’s most enduring melodies.
