Unity in Community Emergency Pantry Vision & History

The Unity in Community Emergency Food Pantry began in March 2020 as a collaboration between Christ Episcopal Church, East View United Church of Christ, Heights Christian Church, Church of St. Dominic, Heights Presbyterian Church, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland, and community stakeholders in Shaker Heights.  Our congregations realized that food insecurity posed a major risk to the stability and well-being of the community.  Springing into action, we opened two emergency pantries.  Since March 2020, our program has distributed food twice monthly to the hungry at our East View United Church of Christ location.  In addition, we have provided home delivery to the sick, elderly, and those without transportation from our Christ Episcopal Church site.  Since our inception, over 13,000 baskets of food, fresh produce, and dairy products have been provided through over 7,000 food distributions.  We are grateful to our generous benefactors, selfless volunteers, and community leaders who worked to end food insecurity in the Shaker Heights area.  A special thank you goes to our Unity in Community Pantry coordinator, Matt Mondry, who organized this effort over the past two-and-a-half years.

Fulfillment of our Mission

October 2022 will be our 31st month of operations.  In consultation with our partners, our leadership team has determined that the Unity in Community Pantry has fulfilled its mission of providing emergency provisions to the hungry during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Most importantly our data shows that while food insecurity still exists, it is not at emergency levels seen during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.  Therefore, October 2022 will be our final month of food distributions.
