We’re Sweet on Recycling Right
If we had a bag of conversation hearts, they would say:
Keep it Loose
Empty, Clean, and Dry
Don’t Wishcycle
When in Doubt, Throw it Out
This month, we’re showing our love for recycling right. Items that don’t belong in recycling can damage sorting machinery and cause expensive delays. Also, when the wrong materials get mixed in with the right ones or materials are too dirty (aka. contamination), it reduces the value of other recyclables sorted correctly.
* Focus on the established core items that belong in curbside recycling: Aluminum cups, metal cans, cardboard, glass bottles and jars, paper, and boxes, plus plastic bottles and jugs.
* Know what specific materials can be recycled in your community. Communities contract with different MRFs,( or materials recovery facility) which determines if you can include additional materials like cartons, plastic tubs, plastic to-go cups, clear plastic clamshells, and paper cups.
*Make sure items in recycling are empty, clean, and dry.
* Place items loose (not bagged) in your recycling cart or bin.
* Don’t wishcycle. It’s time to throw out bad recycling habits. Don’t toss it in the bin expecting someone else to figure it out.
