An ecosystem describes the way that the natural world creates community. At its root, “eco” refers to a household, a family. Ecosystems can be complex, multi-faceted, and sometimes even full of violence and strife. But they model balance and care as all of the parts that make it up contribute to a community that is greater than the sum of its parts. Everything is essential, but no part is more important than anything else. What can an earth full of communities teach us about being in community in our congregation, our city, our nation, our world?
