Rites of Passage
Rites of passage help us mark the important milestones in our lives. At the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland, we recognize these moments through ceremonies that honor both the individual and the community that surrounds them.

Child Dedications celebrate the arrival of a new child and the loving community that will help nurture them. These ceremonies are commitments among parents or caregivers, the child, and the congregation.
Families work with the minister to craft a service that reflects their own cultural and spiritual identity while drawing on Unitarian Universalist tradition. Child Dedications typically include a blessing for the child, an expression of hopes and dreams from caregivers and family members, and a promise from the congregation to support the child’s growth and development.

Coming of Age is a year-long program for youth in early adolescence that encourages deeper exploration of identity, belief, and community. During the program, youth move from teacher-guided learning toward greater independence in shaping their own spiritual journeys.
Participants explore Unitarian Universalist history and traditions, encounter a variety of religious and philosophical perspectives, learn about congregational life, and are invited into civic and ethical engagement. The program often concludes with each youth sharing a Credo—a statement reflecting their developing beliefs and values.

The Bridging ceremony marks the transition from youth to young adulthood. Typically held in the spring as high school seniors prepare for graduation, Bridging celebrates the accomplishments of our young people and offers blessings for the paths ahead. It also reminds young adults that their congregation continues to care for and support them wherever their journeys lead.

Weddings and commitment ceremonies celebrate a couple’s decision to join their lives together. At UUCC, couples work with the minister to design a ceremony that reflects their values, traditions, and shared story.
Ceremonies may be held in the UUCC sanctuary, outdoors, or at another location. Because Unitarian Universalism welcomes a diversity of beliefs, services can incorporate many spiritual or cultural traditions.

Memorial services offer a time to gather in community, remember a life that has ended, and support one another in grief. Families work with the minister to create a service that honors their loved one’s life and legacy while providing space for reflection, remembrance, and shared mourning.
Serving the Wider Community. . .
UUCC extends hospitality beyond our congregation by offering weddings, memorial services, and child dedications to the wider community. Many people come to Unitarian Universalist congregations for life ceremonies because:
- ceremonies can be thoughtfully customized
- membership in the congregation is not required
- services may take place in the sanctuary or another location
- UUCC is a Welcoming Congregation, affirming LGBTQ+ couples and families
There is no single “right” way to honor life’s transitions. Our faith places a high value on dignity in human relationships, and each ceremony reflects the unique lives and commitments of the people involved.
