Impact of Redlining & Hospital Closures
January 29, 2023 @ 9:00 am – 10:00 am
Speaker: Sadeer Al-Kindi, MD, Cardiologist, University Hospitals.
In the 1930s, banks began drawing red lines around neighborhoods that were at higher risk for defaulting on mortgage and business loans. Recent studies by Dr. Sadeer Al-Kindi and others at University Hospitals have shown long-term impacts on healthcare such as cardiovascular disease strokes and cancer in these redlined areas. In the last 15 years, eight hospitals have closed in Cuyahoga County, several very recently. Generally, these hospitals have been in economically disadvantaged areas with significant Black and Hispanic populations. What is the expected long-term health impact of these hospital closures?
