My earliest religious influences were Presbyterianism (my grandfather was a minister), Catholicism (my babysitter), and late nineteenth century Christian children’s literature from my grandmother’s attic. I first learned of Unitarian Universalism from a book about Protestant theology. I was immediately attracted to the seven principles but found the services a little dry and instead joined an African Methodist Episcopal Zion Congregation where I loved the embodied spirituality of the services but struggled with the theology and left after some years.
I joined the UU Society of Cleveland (predecessor congregation to UUCC) around 2000. I had recently divorced and was looking for a spiritual community. One of the first services I attended featured a song by Phil Ochs, a leftist folk singer from the 1960s, and I immediately felt at home. At the Society I served as a worship associate, board member, on two ministerial search committees and also participated in covenant groups. At UUCC I have served as a worship associate, a member of the Racial Justice Leadership Team, co-facilitated the Class Conscious Workshop, participated in Beloved Conversations and enjoyed fellowship as part of a covenant group.
During my working life I provided administrative support to a small non-profit in the areas of bookkeeping, HR, records and IT management. Later I provided administrative support to hospital executives. I am currently retired and am able to spend time with my daughter and grandsons (18 and 20) who live in the area.
